Ani Pro & 3DS Magazine

Gary… Count me in as a contributor if the AAPRO/3DS newsletter looks like
it will come to fruition. I'm a Byte reviewer (and five star fan of 3D
Studio/AniPro… I speak with Jim Kent as times on Bix). I was very
impressed with 3D Studio r1 (after using Topas/Crystal for a number of
years prior to the 3DSr1 release). I enjoyed reviewing 3DS's initial
release and was happy that the review (April 91) provided me a forum to
praise the software. Let me know if your newsletter editor needs additional
authors and I'll be happy to forward my voice number. _ greg
Greg,
Thanks for reminding me about your Byte review from last year… that was a
great review!
I'm not directly involved with the newsletter I mentioned awhile back. It's
being put together by a couple of people who are known for newsletters in
this biz, and as soon as it's formalized I'll make sure that they post info
about it to the forum.

PS: How much have you gotten into r2 yet?
Gary… Thanx for the `kudos' on last year's review of 3DS1. (I was
supposed to present at last year's NCGA Adesk press conference when you
folks unveiled Animator Pro… I didn't realize that you folks had included
my 3DS review in your press kits… I was honored. One of the technical
editors and I – Tom Yager – missed the unveiling. He was miffed that * he *
had assigned me the review and didn't write it himself <grin>).
I'm getting pretty deep into the nuts and bolts of 3DSr2 and it's very,
very impressive. I'm especially thrilled with the reflection/environmental
mapping, as well as the DXF importation fixes that have been implemented. I
do a fair amount of Acadr11 AME solid modeling and so far, I haven't had a
model that's choked on importation.
It looks as if I'll be working on the 3DSr2 review for this year, so I
guess I'll have to leave it pretty `vague' for the moment, but as usual the
product is `sterling'. – greg
Check out the Video Post system in the keyframer. It'll really open your
eyes to some new techniques for putting imagery together. Plus, make sure
to do some NTSC rendering tests to video with field-rendering ON.
And have fun!

Gary. Will do on the Video Post and NTSC field render tests. I'm working on
some `live' video rotoscoping techniques at the moment (using a Diaquest
DQ-50P controller and a single 3/4" VTR… Will see if that's possible…
from what I'm reading it looks like it should be a snap).
Hopefully, I'll get some time on the Sony 1" D1 digital machine shortly.
(Don't know if the default ADI has support for this baby or not. Are you
aware of drivers from Diaquest for the D1?)
BTW: I'm having a great time looking into all the new `nooks and crannies'
inside 3DS2. I guess those `wish list' sheets that came with rel 1 really
did get read! <grin>
Lastly, just an observation, have you folks considered putting the whole
install procedure on the World Creating CD? I've always hoped I'd see the
day when this would happen <just wish listing here>… – Greg
Live video rotoscoping is no problem at all. Just check out the example
explained in Appendix C for how to do it within Video Post.
You can output to D1 many different ways. With the right transcoder, you
can use a Targa+ or Vista. With RGB->YUV conversion software, you can go
straight in digitally. (Abekas has a utility for this.)
You're right… the wish list forms from the 3DSr1 docs were very
instrumental in the development of the r2 feature-set. We got most of the
wishlist items and added quite a few of our own that nobody got around to
thinking of for us. <g>
Finally, regarding putting the entire install on the CD-ROM… that's a
very big point of discussion right now for the future, and it's very
complicated. I'm sure, however, that it's inevitable at some point.
– G
Thanx for the roto-tips Gary. I'll do a little more research on the D1
stuff and give Abekas a call in the very near future.
Glad to hear that you're entertaining the CD/install idea. – Greg
