Deskjet c vs Paintjet

In looking at some of the ads, I see that the HP Desk Jet C and the HP
Paint Jet are at about parity pricing. Can someone tell me what the basic
differences are? What is better? Which does what well? Thanks. Dan Cole
One basic, fundamental difference is that the DJ500C is 300 dpi, same as
most lasers, while the PJ is 180 dpi (I think — might be 150), worse than
some 24-pin dot matrix printers. If you do text, you want the DJ500C, not
the PJ. If all you want is color bar graphs, it might not make a
difference.

paintjet is 180dpi, deskjectc is 300dpi. paintjet has black cartridge and
a color cartridge – so printing black is no problem. deskjetc has only a
color cartridge so black is difficult and positively drains the ink away
rapidly on solid black areas of a picture. i love my paintjet and am going
to keep it, despite the appearance of the DJC. When I want black, I want
black. 180DPI is OK with me – the prints are nice. And I have also a
regular DJ for desktop publishing prints, etc. Maybe that's the best
answer – a regular DJ and a DJC!
You can put a standard black cartridge in a DJ500C with no problems.

I must say the best solution is *not* having both a black and color DJ. The
500C comes with both black and color cartridges. It is a pain to change to
a black cartridge, and the composite black is greenish and wasteful of ink.
But having both DJs is pretty wasteful, too. I had the Black and then
bought the Color, and I, too, thought it would be nice to have both. The
old Black DJ just gets used as a backup when I'm printing color printouts.
So I wonder if there are any votes for sticking to dot matrix and ribbons?
As someone who's printout will always be 80-90% graphics I had been
thinking a few months ago that the old deskjet with color kit might be the
way to go…

Make that 80-90% TEXT!! (I couldn't believe it when I saw "graphics" go by
in my Whap! window. This damn senility is really beginning to bug me!)

If you can find a driver for it, I think the best price/performance for a
color printer goes to the new Canon BJC-800 or BJC-820. (The 820 is the
same as the 800 with the addition of a SCSI port.)
This printer is 300X300 DPI and has all 4 color cartridges. The ink will
last a lot longer than a Paintjet. Unlike the HP units the Canon doesn't
use the same ink spray system. The Canon heats the nozzle when a droplet
is needed and that ejects the drop on the page. I saw a demo of it a
couple weeks ago, and I think it is the new standard to beat. The street
price of it is about $1,800.
