#NOT 68040 compatible

I had previously (twice) asked here on Compuserve whether Amiga Unix was compatible with a 68040, and noone knew. So … I checked with a Commodore rep at the World of Commodore show – who said it was definitely NOT compatible. Something about addressing modes that are not supported by the 68040 – that are used extensively in the Amiga Unix code. He didn't even say that they are committed to making the code work on the 68040 for the next release … so it could be a while – if ever.

Jay: The 68040 compatability problem isn't unique to Commodore's implementation of SVR4 Unix, but rather is a problem with SVR4 in general. This is a problem that will probably be fixed by AT&T, and then MAYBE it will get fixed in Commodore's implementation too.

What a drag! I was going to buy a '040 board for my 2500 and then load AmiX…so now I am going to option (2) 486 with a UNIX either by Sun or Interactive… -Ed

These days Interactive *IS* Sun. Buy Interactive now and you get a cheap upgrade to Solaris 2.0 when it's released. I have heard a release date of something around September for Solaris' Intel version. Buy lots of ram, too; once you get up around 16MB, OpenWindows achieves almost Amiga-like speeds. 🙂

Ed: You could always get an A2630 card, and DKB's new memory expansion card for it, and then load Amiga Unix on it. From what I've been hearing about different implementations of Unix Commodore's is one of the better ones. -Mike Schiller In sunny Fort Lauderdale

It's not limited to SVR4…..any time you jump to a nYSX(U, it's a problem for UNIX in general. Any time you're messing with a new CPU card there's going to be something that has to be done to get it to work, whether it's the hard drive interface, caches, or other on board dependencies. Believe me….I've lived through doing this more than once…. Steve
