#getting into CD-ROM

I am an experienced Mac user on the brink of shelling out between $500 and
$800 for a CD-ROM drive and a few basic titles. Something tells me that I
might be wasting money, and should really wait a few months, and I"ll get
more for less. Confirmations, denials, etc???
If you're going to use it on a Mac only, then *NO* you will not be wasting
your money at all. The MS-DOS world is an entirely different set of
worries. Not to worry with the Mac…
In one sense, you will always get more for your money by waiting, on any
kind of hardware or software. But if you always followed that maxim, you
would never buy anything! Still, I know what you mean. One doesn't want to
be TOO much of a pioneer. The question is not really "will I get more by
waiting", "but will I get enough for my money now that I won't regret the
decision?"
And I think the answer is yes. For a couple years I was like you, holding
off so as to not be too much of a pioneer. But going to MacWorld last week
and seeing all the offerings pushed me over the brink. At the EduCorp
booth, I bought an NEC Intersect CDR-36 bundled with 11 CDs, all for $569!
The 8 CD bundle was $489. For another $230, I could have got the faster
CDR-73, but for now, I think 500ms access time is good enough for me.
Not wanting to drag it all home with me on the train, I am having it
shipped, and it hasn't arrived yet, so I can't review it for you. But I
expect to stay on this forum. I suggest hanging out here and seeing what
people say for a while.
