GIF or ?????

What is the best way to convert GIF pictures or should I use GIF as my
standard? My picture library is growing and I've started to get GIF
format. GIF_View works, but GIFMachine fails which leads me to my
question.

It all depends on what you want to convert them *to*, what size the images
you want to work with are, whether you want scaling or not, and how much
you want to spend to do the job.
If you go the commercial route, there are two serious image conversion
packages which do a good job. Art Department Professional produces some of
the best quality output. It's made by ASDG. Image Master (and it's cousin
Image Professional…) also does a really good job with GIF images. It's
made by Black Belt Systems. Both require lots of fast memory, but you seem
to have that. Both companies have sections and representatives over in the
AmigaVendor forum.
As far as shareware/PD stuff goes, there are a lot of programs out there,
each with their advantages and disadvantages. I'd BROwse on the keyword
GIF in LIB 14 here and try various ones until I found the one to suit my
tastes. Be warned, a number of them don't really handle larger images too
well. (I suspect that's your problem with GIFMachine…)

Allen,
There are several GIF viewers in library 14, along with some converters.
Also, several of our commercial programs can both view GIF and change GIF
to IFF or some other format. I really don't know all of these programs
well enough to tell you which is best. Maybe some of our more
graphic-oriented members will give you advice on this one.
