Best Mac Emulator?

To all knowledged ones: What is the best Macintosh emulator for the Amiga? I know there will be many opinions, but I need to basically run three programs: PageMaker 4.2, Microsoft Works 3.0, and TypeStyler. The kicker is that I only have a A500, but can't I use and A-Max II card with something like the NakedUP Interface? I only problem I can forsee is speed. PM and TypeStyler just crawl along on an 68000, but I'm considering a trade to an A1200 (as soon as I can get the cash). So, whaddya think? Oh, yes, Mac II emulation is what I'm looking for…impossible on an A500?

Scott To the best of my knowlege, there is no other Mac emulator other than the A-MaxII +. The A-Max will run on a 500 with a HI-Q tower if that is the direction you want to go. If you want to save yourself some money, I would call an Amiga reseller and see what you can get for a trade in on your system, and go for a new or referbished 2000. The HI-Q tower, although a very good piece of equipment, is a little on the expensive side. I have seen brand new 2000 systems for less than the cost of the HI-Q. Hope I could help, Douglas E. Menke P. S. There are other Mac emulators, but they are all old versions of the A-Max II +, to the best of my knowlege.

Douglas, }Z9Zu a}is a good idea, but I'm not going to buy that just for the Amax-II +. Can't I use the NakedUp Interface????? anybody? (My next Amiga is goign to be a A1200, btw) Thanks! Scott From Ioway note: I'm having line noise..hence the mistakes

Scott, If you want expandability, you'd better look at something other than the 1200. A3000's may be a better deal because they are faster and more expandable, although they don't support AGA video.

Doug, Need to catch up. The latest addition to the field is Utilities Unlimited's Emplant emulator which is available and provides MacII emulation on any accelerated Amiga. The Emplant is unique in that it is an universal emulator which can emulate any platform with the right software and ROM images.

Doub, Oops, sorry, Doug. No problem. That's what this place is for, so all of us can pick up on something we don't know.

Douglas, No, there are more Mac emulators thatn Amax. Emplant is one to be examined as well. -Jonathan

Jonathan Sorry about that, I need to follow this forum a little more! I am interested in how well that board works. Thanks again for the information. Doug

Scott, The only emulator which can do MacII is the Emplant and it will not work on anything less than a 68030 with at least 8 meg of FAST ram. For anything less you can go with Amax which emulates a Mac Plus. It will run all the programs you have including Pagemaker and all the MS software. With an accelerated Amiga it will run very fast. I use one in an A3000 and it clocks as fast as a MacIIci, but won't do color. The Amax cartridge will work fine with an A500, but the AmaxII + and the Emplant require a Zorro slot.

UU was next to me at the show….and although I have no use for a MacinTrash, they do have quite an impressive product. Dave Elite MicroComputers – Flying high on AutoPilot

Dave, Indeed it is quite an interesting product, although it's still, in my opinion, a little ways off from really being ready for market. Documentation is horrid not to mention almost completely uninformative regarding installation and setup. That may not be a problem for those of us more technically inclined, but is a real problem for the appliance user. It also has some very real constraints regarding usage. In an 8 meg machine you can only get at best about a 5 meg Mac and that's without any Amiga stuff running at boot time which might fragment memory before the emulator is run. It doesn't like 16 bit ram at all and flat refused to run in my 2000 which has both 16 and 32 bit ram. Adding ram needs to be done in minimal 4 meg increments. Going from 8 meg to 9 or 10 meg won't get you a bigger Mac system. Any Amiga memory which isn't contiguous can't be used by the emulator. When something goes wrong it just simply crashes. There's no elegance in failure! and no recovery. But, those nuisances aside it's quite an achievement.

Steve & Dave, Just thought I'd pop in with an Emplant update. Jim has posted that a new manual is done and on it's way to the printer (registered users will be sent a copy) and access to MAC floppys through the AMAX interface is now working. BTW No I don't have Emplant yet. But I went to a MAC multimedia seminar last week and won a copy of Passport Producer. So I've go a real incentive to look into it ;)! …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-
