#Amiga Emulator for IBM

Folks: I'm looking for a software package that will let me run Amiga software on IBM PC. I've seen one such shareware package on a local BBS, but the docs were in German, so I haven't downloaded it yet (big download on a pay BBS). Does anyone have any recommendations (shareware or otherwise)? TIA, –Phil

Philip, I don't think such software exists. There was something called an Amiga Emulator for the PC, but it didn't work. It was just a joke. Betty

Phil There is no such beast, I'm afraid … there is currently no way of running Amiga software on the PC. The PC is such an old-fashioned machine it would be well-nigh impossible to emulate all the features of the Amiga in software and the apparent Amiga-emulator that appeared from Germany was a hoax, although it did create quite a stir when it appeared. However, I keep hearing little whispers of an Amiga emulator _card_ for the PC but, at the moment, this just seems like wishful thinking. Mike (Whapping from the UK)

You are all wrong. This is an emulator called IBEM. And the demo can be downloaded from many good amiga BBS's. It does run real slow, about XT speed on a Amiga 3000.. So to all of you who say it don't exist.. It does.. The demo version only operates for 15 minutes..

We were talking about an Amiga emulator that runs on the IBM, not any of the various IBM emulators which run on the AMiga. Steve

Alan, you have it backwards! IBeM is an IBM emulator that runs on the Amiga. The questioner was asking for an Amiga emulator that runs on the IBM. There are several IBM emulators (or have been) that run on the Amiga, but NOTHING that emulates the Amiga runs on the IBM. Betty

Mike: Thanks for the info… I've been looking at buying an Amiga for my home, and thought I could stay compatible with my employer's PCs if an emulator did exist. About a year ago I checked into the Amiga 3000's ability to run PC software, but at that time the price made it more attractive to buy a 2000 and a PC — is this still the case? TIA, –Phil

Philip: PC file compatibiltiy is really no problem. Using DOS-2-DOS or Cross-Dos (both commercial, well under $50) or the MSH messydos file system (shareware) you can read and write msdos format disks (but not high density disks). Commodore BridgeBoards that actually put either an XT or AT PC inside your Amiga 2000 or 3000 have dropped substantialy in price… You can get an AT Bridgeboard new for around $450 and used for around $350. I'm selling an XT Bridgeboard for 'the best offer' (see the message in the calssifieds in AmigaUser). For the Amiga 500, there's the ATOnce emulator which runs new for around $350 and I think that Supra has another emulator out for the 500 at around the same cost. I use spreadsheets (Lotus) and wordprocessor docs (Wordperfect saved as ascii) from my PC on my Amiga all the time using nothing more than cross-dos. New Horizons (the publishers of Dos-2-Dos) have a section in the AmigaVendor forum. – Whapp!ng from the North Coast Michael

It is no longer attractive to buy a Amiga 2000 PERIOD. Those marketing loosers at Commodore jacked the price up on the 2000's something like $900!! $2000 for an A2000??? Give me a break! I paid that in Sept 1988 and that included a monitor! The A2000 was available not to long ago for around $999 at a local dealer. See the editoral in the new INFO for more details. Nick

Philip: Mike answered your questions about PC hardware emulators for the Amiga. If your PC needs are modest, you could also go ultracheap and get a shareware program called IBeM … which emulates a PC entirely via software. It multitasks with the PC side and gives you a CGA color window plus up to 704K of RAM. Runs Wordperfect, etc. Speed is acceptable on an Amiga 3000.
