#Zeus Imagine Failure

Shawn, I'm using the Zeus board with an A2000 and Imagine 2.0 with no problems. A couple of suggestions i have that might help in isolating the problem are: Set up a test animation with oonly one light and one object. Render only a couple of frames first to your hard drive. If that doesn't work, then render a couple of frames to the ram:disk. This might tell you if the problem is in rendering to your hard drive. Also, as soon as you start to render, switch to the main workbench screen and click on it to activate it. You will be able to watch the amount of ram drop off as imagine is initializing a frame. the memory updating happens every 5 – 10 seconds or so. I have used this technique in the past to see if I'm running out of ram. If your ram gets down to 150k during the initializing of a frame, the system will stop by the next time the memory usage is updated. Hopr this helps. – via Whap!

Thanks, I did find out that it was a memory problem, what a memory pig. I have to have 12 MB of RAM to render 1 object. I am useing no maps, wraps, textures, or even trying to render 24 bit. Oh well maybe 3.0 will be better at memory handling. Thanks all for the help however……. 🙂 Ciao Shawn

If that 1 object is Carmen Rizzolo's NCC1701D I'm not surprised ya needed 12 megs to render it.

Shawn, Don't forget to set the global size to zero. I don't know if this will have any effect on memory usage, but it increases rendering time in raytrace mode substantially, since it will define the size of the world based on the object that is furthest away from the world center. This also means it is wise to keep as many of your objects near the center as possible. Happy rendering! – via Whap!

I am working on a object that is also using about 12 megs to render and it also has no textures or IFFs but the problem is that this is only 1 of the objects in the scene! Tell me about the object you have, how many faces does it have? If it is a PD object I probably already have it but if it is you own creation please give us a description. I don't know much about Crays but I do know there are quite a few number of different models that perform at different speeds, so I am sure that for $5,000 you wouldn't get the fastest model. Some guy locally bought an $18M cray for around $15K. (Appearantly, he could melt it down for siler & gold and triple his investment. Fortunately, he realizes the historical value of the computer and probably won't do that.) The only problem is it takes something like 1.5MW when fired up . . . He'll probably be hard pressed to power it at home. :^) Keep On Toastin' Erik Flom

Yeah, he wouldn't want to plug that in! When I was at Purdue, we got a new "FireBreather" system from Gould. It melted the wiring in the wall when they plugged it in! Steve
