I read in the April issue of Amazing Amiga that Saxon Industries seems
to have closed down. Can anyone confirm or deny this? I'm not an
owner of either of their programs, Saxon Publisher and SaxonScript
Professional, but I am interested in keeping track of what is
happening in the Amiga market.
If you try to call Saxon you will find their number has changed. They
now answer the phone as Emerald Graphics. Saxon Publisher/SaxonScript
is now sold in the UK as "The Publisher" at a very low price, but it
hasn't been changed any since 1.2 I believe. I cannot speak for them
and do not know what their future plans are, but they are for all
intents and purposes, not in the game anymore. They had some neat
features, but didn't have a standard interface and lacked many of the
basic features that both PgS and PPage have, so they never became any
sort of competition and never got a significant market share. The
person who answered their phone once for me mentioned that they were
doing PC work.
Saxon is no more, but the Saxon products are being sold by Emerald
Graphics now, and the person who was Saxon is working at Emerald…
I sadly must report that I've gotten the runaround at Emerald. I
ordered SaxonScript and have never been able to get it to work on TWO
very differently configured systems — one a plain vanilla A500 with
4 megs of RAM and the other an '030-equipped A2000HD. I'm pretty sure
I installed SS correctly, though the install routine is rather odd. I
spent much time on several phone calls to the guy at Emerald and he
was always understanding and helpful. We concluded on three different
occasions that perhaps my disks were bad and that he'd see that I got
a fresh disk to try again. Never, ever have I seen that disk in my
mailbox, even after months of phoning and faxing and renewed
reassurances from Emerald that it would be on its way. I've invested
$100 in a package that simply won't function form me (a requester
always pops up when I try to print to the active PSC: device,
insisting that the interpreter is unavailable).
Meanwhile, though, I've gotten a fat bill from some customs
clearinghouse on the NY-Canadian border for additional Canadian
customs fees for the package, which of course doesn't work. I may end
up disputing this bill with my credit card company. I dunno. I just
haven't had these kinds of problems very often and that's why I would
caution anyone against SaxonScript. Which is really too bad, because
we really need it, or something like it.
It's a miracle these guys are still in business. Sounds like a great
product! Given the circumstances, wish I didn't have a copy.
I have a similar problem with SaxonScript. Every time I run it it asks me
for my ID number again. The problems are plainly caused by bad settings
files. I cured the problem for a while by wiping it completely off the
hard disk and reinstalling from scratch. But then one day I moved the
SaxonScript drawer somewhere else and it all started again. Bah!
But when it works, it's a lovely program.

Hey, I'll try reinstalling it several times, though I did that twice
without effect. Maybe on another partition or something.
Moved it? Maybe you need to add an ASSIGN statement to tell AmiDos where
it is? I had such a problem once because I moved the icon and main program
but didn't realize I left some hidden files in the old directory.
I can't get SaxonScript here very easily, is it able to do footnotes,
indexes, glossarys? How is it for fonts? Postscript?
