CD-ROM Question

Hi,all. I'm (at last) going to replace my old A1000 at home, probably with a
used A2000 (can't afford the A3000 i use at work…). I'm especially
interested in adding a CD-ROM, when drivers become available (this spring???).
I'd like to be able to get the World Book encyclo- pedia for the family. I'm
concerned, though, that this will require running MS-DOS software to ACCESS the
encyclopedia (i.e., to do the database searching). Anyone have ideas about
this? Would I have to wait for World Book to come out with an Amiga version
(if ever)??

Your query came addressed to me. Unfortunately I don't know anything about
CD-ROM devices; you probably intended this to go to "all".

Does the A590 have a SCSI adapter inside? Would it be possible to hack it so
that it works with a SCSI card? Brian

CDROM drivers ARE already available. There are 3 of them as a matter of
fact. They are: Canadian Prototype Replicas, Asimware, and Xytec. I don't
have phone numbers handy, but perhaps somebody else can give you more
info.

The World Book probably will cost you a ton. One alternative: Call
Commodore Express, which currently is selling CDTVs for $299 WITH
Grolier's Electronic Encyclopedia, which alone is worth the price. Parnet
CDTV to your 1000 or next Amiga and you'll be able to access the
encyclopedia directly via your existing A1000. When a CD-ROM peripheral
drive for Amigas becomes available, move CDTV into your den or buy the $99
keyboard/mouse/disk drive pack to turn it into a spare computer.

Doesn't Xetec have a CD-ROM drive for Amiga's (eg; a CD-ROM peripheral)?

Yes. And there's a Xetec driver that supposedly gives 90% or so
compatibility with existing CDTV software. You also can use many
third-party CD-ROM drives, either with Xetec's driver (which I think is
also sold separately) or one of two other drivers. I forget their names.
One is Asim-something or other. The other comes from Hypermedia Concepts
in Racine, Wisconsin.
