What will be the END USE of these FLI's???? Lucky for us Amigans that some of our software supports writing FLI's

Peter, > Spatially and temporally smooth in appearance, at a playback rate of 18 fps Well I guess I COULD slow down my anims to see if they would look good on a 18fps PC! 😉 …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Well Paul Don't forget Nearly ALL Animation even that which is done by Disney is usually running at 12 FPS for Film and 15 FPS for Video. Unless there's ALOT of Motion in the Scene they "Shoot on Two's" to save time on drawing. You merely need to try to keep the Differences between each frame Closer so it doesn't look Jerky. I just Converted a 20 Frame Anim of the BD-Girl Walking Away from the Camera to FLI. I CAN'T believe that this Lousy 20 Frame 320*200*256 color anim is WELL OVER a MEG in size. If you don't already have it get the LARGE BOOK Disney Animation: The Illusion of Life. Lotsa good techniques are discussed in it. Be aware tho that this Monster of a Book LISTS for $75 tho I got it for $38 a while back thru the Publishers Central Buraue

If I remember correctly, the .FLI format performs simple RLE compression on each frame and also optimizes by not storing duplicates of pixel chunks that don't change between frames. Therefore, if the camera is moving and the background is not a single color, then the .FLI tends to be rather flabby.
#29201From: Peter GreciApr 19, 1993 5:22 PM
Thanx for the info Kai, BTW the FLI in question has a Stationary Camera with a Grayscale Background and is nought but a 20 frame loop of the BD Girl Walking in Place.
#29228From: Geoff GoldbergApr 20, 1993 2:28 PM
Oops! That wasn't Kai – twas me (with Kai's permission). I've found that many types of dithering can more than double the .FLI size. I've generated some 30-frame animations lately where everything is moving – they're still big at @600K but an improvement I think. I disabled dithering so I either limit the number of dissimilar colors in a scene or hope nobody notices the contouring amongst all the action. Of course we only suffer these problems over here in PC-land :^)
#29257From: Peter GreciApr 21, 1993 4:14 PM
Sounds Feaseable. I used Floyd-Steinberg Dithering so perhaps this is what is causing the HUGE File size for a Lousy 20 frame FLI

Peter, I have that book, and it's rather dog eared from frequent use! …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Ahhhh Thou art Well Enlightened Jedi Knight. Another Pretty Good Book is "Experimental Animation: Origin's of a New Art" by Robert Russett and Cecile Starr. No Where NEAR as good as the Disney Book but interesting nonetheless. I also recommend the book "Industrial Light and Magic: The Art of Special Effects" by Thomas G Smith. Another EXPENSIVE Book. The Material is a Bit Dated but Still VERY Informative, tho not much on CGI since this book is from around 1984 or so.

Peter, Thanks for the book tips. Now if only I had time to sit down and read! …AutoPilot Engaged… -Paul-

Me too, Now that I work within Walking Distance of my Home instead of a 2 hour each way Train Ride away, I Haven't read ANY Books lately. I have a hard time reading all the Magazines I subscribe to now. Glad to give the Book Tips.

Didn't I read an article somewhere that Disney was experimenting with using computer tweening to fill in the gaps for those "Shoot on Two's" setups? Since they've been using computers for coloring frames for some things for a while now, this would seem like a very obvious and easy step for them to do… And that book is indeed a wonderful one, highly recommended for any budding animator… I managed to snag a copy at a nearby book warehouse for $25 some time back… –>Steve Bennett

I'm Jelous now hehehehehehe ya got a better Deal than me. I dunno if thats true or not about Computerized Tweening at Disney. Perhaps theyy are refferring to Motion Blurring to smooth it up a bit?

The animations will be used for trade show demos and presentations (not really, but close enough!) To be honest, I can't disclose the purpose. However, there are some additional requirements which, when revealed, should make the intent clear. When we see some interesting work, we'll disclose those requirements.
#29203From: Peter GreciApr 19, 1993 5:22 PM
Sorry then Dude. No Disclosure of the Purpose, I can't send you examples of my work. Good Luck in your Search.

Lets fire up those Amigas and do some demos that'll REALLY show people what a clone can do! ;^)
#29163From: Kai KennerApr 18, 1993 10:19 PM
Do I sense a touch of PC-envy? Seriously, why do you think I came straight to this forum when I needed some righteous animations?
#29220From: James M. BrittApr 20, 1993 10:00 AM
Maybe you should start offering some righteous cash? We aren't in the habit of giving our creations to anyone that happens to come along!
#29260From: Peter GreciApr 21, 1993 4:15 PM
I was Perfectly Willing to give away some work in exchange for a Credit in their Product but NOT if they are unwilling to tell me WHAT the Blasted Work will be used for. I'm not much of a Business man hehehehehe I end up offering to do alot of work Gratis just because I LOVE it. Just did animated Titles for a Retirement Party Video…..Gratis. Tho that really don't count since I know the Dude thats Retiring. I think This is going to happen more and more soon. Lotsa Folks in my Title that have Considerably more than the 20 Years required for Retirement. I'll HAPPILY Do all their Video's as each one that goes moves me up a notch.
#29242From: jeff HolinskiApr 21, 1993 12:56 AM
I get PC-envy every time I see all the games that are available for clones. Then I look at Windoze and when I finally sotp laughing I'm cured. When you're impressing people with these demos you ARE going to explain that they couldn't be done on a PC right? :^) I've got a friend with an Iris. If I transfered some of his stuff to the Amiga I could make some REALLY impressive Amiga demos. Of course that sort of defeats the purpose of a graphics demo.
#29182From: Rodney MassmanApr 19, 1993 11:48 AM
Now hang on a sec, were Amigans doing animations for PC-based computers??? Sounds like using a sledge when all you needed was a hammer…. -Rodney Massman * On AutoPilot in Beantown, The Buckeye State *

One of the most hilarious things I saw at the Trenton Computer Faire this weekend was the demos being used at the dozens and dozens of PC clone vendors there. Nearly all could be listed in two categories: Slide shows of women in swimsuits, and animations. And of the animations, I only think I saw one or two which was NOT originally created on an Amiga… <grin> .–>Steve Bennett
#29261From: Peter GreciApr 21, 1993 4:15 PM
That figures. Did they Show "Virtual Valerie" at the Trenton Computer Fair? I just read about this somewhat interactive CD in Newmedia. Sounded like a GREAT idea from the Marketer's Angle. It seems that all the Top Selling CDROM's are of Nudes and Quicktime Anims on CDROM of Porn etc.
#29286From: Erik FlomApr 21, 1993 11:36 PM
I was reading a trade rag the other day and they think that phone-sex is going to be the 'cash-cow' of the video-phone market. Yechh. (How's that for "interactive"?) Keep On Toastin' Erik Flom
#29290From: jeff HolinskiApr 22, 1993 3:38 AM
If phone-sex does become the 'cash cow' of the video-phone market it's just a matter of time before they have a behind the scenes look on Current Affair. They'll show some fat old woman in her 60's clipping pictures out of Penthouse and holding them up to her phone. ;^) Watching a show on phone-sex is like seeing how they did the special FX on Terminater 2…..It'd be REALLY hard to enjoy it after you know how they do it. :^(
#29306From: Erik FlomApr 22, 1993 1:47 PM
Oh well, porn drove the video rental market, and look where it is today. Lord knows I've heard about videophones for long enough! (Of course, think about it. Would you really want to put your face on camera EVERY time you got a phone call. There are times when this could be quite embarassing.) Erik Flom
#29308From: jeff HolinskiApr 22, 1993 2:50 PM
Wouldn't embarass me. I ALWAYS look good! ;^) Seriously though, there could be a big market for talking heads people could put in front of their phones. Or you could sell phones with a video jack built in that people could plug into their VCR and play back recorded images of themselves. Of course the sound wouldn't be synced with the video, but it shouldn't be and worse than an old Godzilla movie. ;^)

Yah, that's how polaroid cameras got started. I used to make part for them back in the late 60's. I was reading DR. Land's news letters. How do you think the name "land camera" got to be, after Dr. Land who invented it. Actually he "borrowed" the idea from Keaystone. Just a little trivia to add to your discussion. george

Until Tipper Gore gets on the Case that is. Then Vid Phone Sex will be Outlawed along with anything else they can tack onto the Bill. I say Add a HUGE SIN TAX to it, Why Shouldn't Our "UNCLE" Cash in. Maybe with all the Perv's here in the US they can balance the Budget.
#29342From: Erik FlomApr 22, 1993 10:30 PM
It's amazing how much money 'sin' taxes bring in, especially since we're supposed to be a 'Christian nation' :^)
#29352From: jeff HolinskiApr 23, 1993 3:31 AM
You think you pay a lot for 'sin taxes'? You've never spent much time in Canada have you? Up here the governments idea of 'sin' is anyone except them having any money. :^(

Heehee, I ONLY Drink for Medicinal Purposes I assure you. Actually I was Raised Catholic tho I like the "Heathen" Religions much better. I think I'll take a smattering of the techings of the Norsemen, add a dash of Wicca and then season with some of the Beliefs of my People, the Mohawk. Maybe I'll move someplace with a GREAT NAME too. Have you all worship a Head of Lettuce named Ralph. This msg is totally pointless eh? Are you entering the Inside Space Contest that Amigaworld is cosponsoring?????(trying to get back on topic)
#29415From: Erik FlomApr 24, 1993 11:22 AM
Do you have the address for that 'Inside Space' thingie? I thought I had it, but seem to have mislaid their address. If so, could you please pass it on to me? Thanks, (& 'Skoal!') Erik Flom

No kidding, I mean, last weekend – friend of mine was looking at a 486 at Sams Wholesale and on the side of the box it comes packed in is an old, old (and I do mean old) Pic of the 3 or 4 transparent spheres against a brick wall background – the same pic created on the Amiga years ago! -Rodney Massman * On AutoPilot in Beantown, The Buckeye State *
