#modem/dos problem?

Hi, I'm wondering if the upgrade to amigados 2.0 has anything to do with
the intermittant failure of my modem: ie. not intializing properly, or
sudden spewing garbage charactors onto my screen, or multiple errors when
dl'ing and the list goes on… I have a penril datacom cadet 2400 modem and
use jrcomm 1.02. If you've heard of similiar problems please let me know.
Also when I call compuserve now I get a connect 1200 message eventhough I
am connected at 2400. I don't understand why this is happening but since
all my other hardware has needed upgraded roms since I got 2.0 maybe there
is a connection? Thanks

No, the modem itself should continue to work. The version of the
ROM has nothing to do with the modem. The new serial driver that comes
with 2.04 may be corrupted (perhaps during the copy) or JRComm may have a
problem with 2.04, but not the modem itself.

Oh…one more thing…the serial port is controlled by one of the
8520 CIA chips in your Amiga. When the ROM was replaced with the new ROM,
it's possible that one of the 8520's got zapped and that's causing your
problem.

Have you ever had problems with telephone line noise? Are you connecting
to CIS throught a node like TELENET or to a CIS number? Check your RS232
Cable (25 PIN) Lastly, try a different terminal program. Hopefully you
have a backup of JRComm. For the most part your problem sounds like a
noisy telephone line. Here in Oklahoma we get that way after a rain.

Thanks for your reply Rodger,
I am dialing direct to cis, also what should I look for on pin 25
of my cable. In addition, another aspect of my problem is that jr-comm will
say it is dialing the number but the modem is not responding, then I will
reboot and turn off and on the modem only to find that it dials properly,
which strikes me as kind of strange…Goodbye…Scott

(I'm jumping in here uninvited but…)
Modems seem to need careful initialization. Much software does not
accurately initialize modems for use, especially after failed sessions and
abrupt terminations…. powering a modem on and off is often necessary …
exiting a comm program and re-entering it is often necessary … and I've
even resorted to exiting program 1, firing up program 2, exiting it, and
going back to program 1 in order to initialize the modem properly… (I'm
thinking MS-DOS Crosstalk here…)
Of course, one could always read the modem manual about what initialization
strings are appropriate…and a week later you'd know a lot more than I
do…
