#CDU31A Initialisation
6 messages in this thread
Chuck.
I have recently installed , and with some success, the 31A beta driver for OS/2
2.1. Howver I am experiencing some problems.
1. If anything other than a NON AUDIO CD is in the drive at bootup then I get a
SYS message 'Sector not found…./Drive not ready'. Happens all the time even
if the drive is empty, unless a non-audio CD is in the drive.
2. Several applications demand a NON AUDIO CD in the drive because of SECTOR
NOT FOUND. Once these applications are started I can change the CD to an Audio
type. These include ; MMOS2 Volume Control & Golden Commpass Compuserve
Navigator. In this case I insert a non-audio CD and all is OK.
3. Sometimes I also get 'Drive G: in use' (CD Drive) when an audio Cd is in the
drive. Replacing with non-audio CD again does the trick.
Other than these nigglies, a great job.
Regards, Roland Cise.
Roland,
I still can't get OS/2 Mar. Beta to do the CD install using SONYB31A.ADD. My
drive is connected to a ProAudio Spectrum 16, and all works swell in
DOS/Windows. But when trying to install OS/2 2.1 following the included
directions, I continue to get SYS0318 errors. Was there anything special you
had to do to get it to work? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Eric,
Thanks for the message. I have had a bit of troble getting the CDU31A driver to
work. Here is what I had to do for multimedia and cdrom.
1.Update the config.sys as follows.
REM —————— CD-ROM PARAMETERS ——————————
IFS=D:\OS2\CDFS.IFS /Q BASEDEV=SONYB31A.ADD /A:0 /P:1F88 BASEDEV=OS2SCSI.DMD
DEVICE=D:\OS2\OS2CDROM.DMD /Q DEVICE=D:\OS2\MDOS\VCDROM.SYS
REM ————————– MULTIMEDIA —————————– SET
DSPPATH=D:\MMOS2\DSP; SET MMBASE=D:\MMOS2; SET NCDEBUG=4000
DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\VAUDIO.SYS DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\ACPADD2.SYS A
DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\SSMDD.SYS DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\ADSHDD.SYS
DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\MVPRODD.SYS /I:10 /D:3 /S:1,220,5 /N:PAS161$
DEVICE=D:\MMOS2\AUDIOVDD.SYS PAS161$
2. Ensure all disk drivers (I have a hard card) come before the above.
3. Check the PATH/DPATH/LIBPATH and SWAP path statements to make sure that the
cd drive is NOT included.
4. Boot OS/2. At this point the CD is NOT recognized as the sound card needs to
be initialized first.
5. Shutdown and re-boot. Sound and CD rom are both OK. Works great.
I hope this helps.
Best regards, Roland.
Roland,
I really appreciate the help. Did you have any trouble with the CD-ROM
install? If so, how did you get it to work? No matter what I do, I get the
SYS0318 hang during installation. Its been an adventure so far!
Thanks,

Eric,
I think I have some good news. Try the following:
edit your DOS CONFIG.SYS file – add the parameter /W:0 to the install line
for MVSOUND.SYS.
boot DOS so that MVSOUND installs with this new parameter
NOW try installing OS/2 off the CDU-31A. I spoke to Ken Nicholson of Media
Vision today and he mentioned that the MVSOUND.SYS (DOS) driver monitors one of
the BIOS timer registers in the system. When that register is written to as
part of the warm boot process, the MVSOUND driver puts the PAS-16 board to
sleep so that all pending sound operations are discarded. The "/W:0" switch
prevents the warm boot knockout, thus allowing access to the CDU-31A from OS/2.
I _think_ this explains why some (most) people are having problems installing
off the PAS-16 and some people aren't – some systems probably have non-standard
addresses for the particular BIOS timer that MVSOUND is supposed to monitor, so
the board isn't always being put to sleep. Give it a shot if you can, and let
me know if it works for you.
Chuck
Roland,
Thanks for the problem reports – I'm looking into some problems with audio
CD's, and I hope to have fixes soon.
