#Creative Labs info
5 messages in this thread
Hi,
I left a message a few days ago asking if anyone had any recommendations for
the Creative Labs multimedia kit. I didn't get an response, so I'm still not
sure. I do have a soundblaster pro in my system and the dealer is going to
give me a credit off of the multimedia kit, because I purchased the
soundblaster from him.
I noticed in Computer Shopper mag, that there is talk of an 8bit multimedia kit
and a 16 bit system. Any info on this? Any suggestions for a beginner to get
into multimedia? I have about 500.00 to spend and I thought the Creative Labs
kit might be a good way to start.
Hope to hear from someone.

Jim:
A couple weeks ago I bought the SoundBlaster multimedia kit that includes a
drive, speakers, two CDs and Lemmings, and the new SB 16 board. It took about
15 minutes to install the whole thing and it's worked great so far.
Make sure you get the kit with the 16-bit board. It's the best deal around, I
think. I first bought the kit with the SB Pro, but I took that back and went
to another store that had the 16-bit kit (I did this before I installed it :>
).
Any other questions, just ask.

Todd,
I picked up the Edutainment 16 pack by creative labs. I got it locally for
317.00. I had purchased a Sound blaster pro from them a few months ago and I
asked them if I brought it back would they deduct the purchase price from the
cd kit.
The one problem I am having is when I run any dos cd's. I have Sherlock and
Time Almanac (which I purchased) and the sound crackles on these. When I run
other CD's in windows, they sound great. I think the driver is wrong for dos.
Do you use any CD's in DOS? How do they sound if you do. I guess you could
say my vocals sound like they are bubbling or popping. I'm using a 386DX 25
mz.
Hope to hear from you. Jim
Jim:
No, I don't think I've used any CD-ROMs in DOS. But I do think your problem is
with the drivers, only because I'm always hearing that that's the problem with
most of these things.
I've been trying to run a program called CD Tray that lets you run audio CDs
with a little more flexibility than using SB's program. The author tells me
it's a driver problem. I'm still trying to figure that out.
Hope you're happy with your system. I found out what I was afraid of: CD-ROM
is largely a novelty and not a day-to-day tool. But then I haven't got my
hands on that new Beatles CD-ROM! 🙂
Take care,
Todd
TODD, FIRST OF EXCUSE THE CAPITAL LETTERS, MY WORKSTATION HERE AT WORK HAS A
STUCK CAP LOCK KEY. "A BEATLES CD ROM" I HAVEN'T HEARD ABOUT THAT, TELL ME
MORE.
BY THE WAY, I USED THE CD PLAYER HERE IN THE CDROM LIBRARY . I BELIEVE IT IS
LIBRARY 4. I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT.
I TALK TO CREATIVE LABS ABOUT MY DOS PROBLEMS AND HE HAD A VERSION OF
"SHERLOCK" THAT MADE THE SAME NOISE. I JUST A LITTLE UPSET THAT I BOUGHT THE
TIME ALMANAC, AND IT RUNS UNDER DOS AND IT DOES IT ALSO. I HAVE TO SEE WHAT
THE DEALERS POLICY ON CD-ROMS ARE FOR RETURN.
I PURCHASED STREET ATLAS YESTERDAY AT A COMPUTER SHOW, AND I LOVE IT. ALL THE
STREET MAPS OF THE WHOLE UNITED STATES, WOW
HOPE TO TALK TO YOU AGAIN JIM
