WB Pictures

Does anyone out there really understand how the WBPattern stuff works in
3.0?
Here's my tale…
I am trying to put some fairly neat (well, I think so) pictures up on the
Workbench background. I had been using Nickprefs on my 2000 for this. The
big deal is, what I would do is use (say) a 16 color workbench (not too
bad with a 68030). Using ADPro I would lock the first four colors into the
standard workbench colors, then let ADpro pick the next 12. With the right
dithering, this would look pretty snazzy. BTW, I am trying to use scanned
pix with a lot of colors, or perhaps some delicate flesh tones.
ANYHOO, I figured with a 256 color WB, I'd be in hog heaven. Not quite
so. It seems like WB is screwing around something ferocious with my
colors. Hmmmm, well, I can deal with this (he sez). I'll just grab the
workbench screen, and save its palette to use with my pix. After all,
ADPro is real good at getting a reasonable picture in any palette you
like. So I grab a 256 color workbench, and re-render using its palette. I
thence re-load my picture and… GARBAGE. Looks terrible, like a bad 16
color job. 🙁
OK, so the questions… How is WB re-mapping the colors? Sometimes this
looks OK, other times it looks like hell. How can I force WB to use my
palette? Does anybody have anything that can read + write palette presets
under 3.0? (I guess the 2.1 system of using an IFF palette was too easy
for us to work with 🙁 ) How many colors does the WB re-map my picture
too? Is there any chance of a 256 color capable Nickprefs? (My preferred
solution, BTW).
