#Hard drive backup
7 messages in this thread
I'm getting a tape backup for my PC at work that plugs into the parallel
port. I'm looking for a backup program for my A4000 that can use the
parallel port. Don't know if one exists or if it is even possible.

I'm aware of no such software for the Amiga. I'm not sure that it is
possible
(PC parallel ports seem to be a bit different from ours).

Julius,
the "Diavolo Backup" software by German company
Spider Computer Produkte GmbH
Fraunhoferstrasse 11
D-82152 Martinsried
Germany
Phone/Fax: ++49-89-7194448
seems to be able to utilize a tape drive on the parallel port. I don't
know if the drive used is the same as the parallel port PC tape drives,
though. IF these drives are standardized in a way this MIGHT be working,
but if every manufacturer makes their own standards… well, having a tape
drive at PAR: is not like SCSI with standardized pin-assignments and
signals and everything… Does the tape drive work with all sorts of
backup software? Either way, if you tell me what kind of drive you have on
the PC I might ask them if it will work, ok?

Chris,
The unit is called Trakker, by Colorado Memory Systems. I haven't
recieved it yet, so I don't know who actually makes the tape drive. The
unit comes with software for the PC. I'll give you more information as
soon as I get the unit.
Thanks

Julius,
I called them yesterday and was told the following:
a) Diavolo Backup supports Tape Backup devices in general (i.e.
standard SCSI streamers)
b) there has been available (and will be again – it's sold out at the
moment) a tape streamer for the parallel port(?) which uses a special
interface. This is NOT compatible to PC tape streamers which connect
directly to the parallel port. It IS compatible to streamers which utilize
the floppy controller of a PC and have an adaptor sitting somewhere in
between the controller board and the floppy drive.
