I would like to have a (hardcopy) print made of one frame of a
Hi-8 video tape. I would prefer to have the print made from the
original format but can transfer it to VHS or maybe even Beta if
necessary. My A2000 is not set up to do this. Consequently, I have
a couple of questions.
1. Does anyone here offer this as a service?
2. How much should it cost?
3. What would be typical quality for the resultant hardcopy?

I can grab the frame from a HI-8 tape for you and out put it to a 24-bit
file. The only printing I can do is to a 300 DPI black and white laser
printer. You could upload the file I give you to a company or other member
that has the ability to produce a color picture if you wish.

What would be the format of the 24-bit file? I have a color printer
attached to my A2000 but am unsure of whether I would need any special
software to print the file. Also, I have a friend who may be able to gain
access to a color laser printer but it would be from an MS-DOS or Windows
platform.
Alternatively, I could do as you suggested and upload the file to a
company…but I would have to locate one first.
In any case, what would be your fee (aside from shipping both
directions which I would obviously cover)?
Heck, I'll do it for free for a fellow Amiga user. All you have to do
is cover the postage. The format would be IFF-24 or any other format
you require. I have Art Department Professional and can do just about
any format translation you want. Since I have a 4000, I can save it
to either an Amiga formatted disk or an IBM formatted Hi-Density disk
(which would be better since 24-bit files approach 1 meg. in size,
unless you have access to an Amiga Hi-Density drive), this way your
friend can print it on his/her Laser (color laser, WOW). As far as
companies that do this, here are 2 for you, PeeCee's Digital Imagery
508-676-0844, and PIM at 800-345-3360 (ask for the service bureau
rep.). They can output any format to slides, negatives, prints,
transparencies, etc..
There is a terrific shareware program (won awards, etc) which you can download
from one of the CompuServe forums called Paint Pro. It loads into a windows
environment. Very snappy interface. I use the Toaster to grab a from from the
Hi-8, load it into TPaint then save it as an RGB file with is the 24-bit IFF
format than dan is talking about. Paint Pro will read IFF files and output
them to a printer, or it will convert it a TIFF format common in the PC world
or several other platform files. Should be easy to print from there. I output
my framestores this way to a 600 dpi laser printer, but only in B&W. If you
want to go this route, I can look up where I downed loaded the program from –
it was mentioned in one of the CompuServe mags a couple of months ago.
Is Paint Pro an Amiga program or an IBM program? I only have an Amiga. I
have used ADPro 2.5 to print 24 bit IFFs. Would Paint Pro print better?

Paint Pro is an IBM program running under windows. I use it for cross platform
transfers, particularly to DTP which I do on the IBM. Glenn
Glenn, that is Paint Shop Pro available as PSP.ZIP from the Graphics Support
forum (GO GRAPHSUP) library 5 "Paint Programs", I think <grin>. It is a
Windows PC mode type of program that will use the resources available through
Windows. I've done some printing of freeze frames extracted from the TBC using
PhotoStyler (another PC mode program) on an HP DeskJet 550C and gotten pretty
good results with it although the 550C is only a 300 dpi printer. HP recently
upgraded their drivers and finally got it right, or at least improved it
considerably over their earlier versions.

You might try to find a place local to you that has a "Video Printer"
such as those made by Sony and Mitsubishi. Or try contacting John
Bennet here online perhaps he can do it for you tho I am unsure of
pricing.
You need to find someone that has a Video Printer type device. This will
let you plug your S-Video cable straight into the printer and get Great
prints.
Or else you could do a Frame Grab then print the image using some display
device to the printer. Theirs probably someone local to you that can
supply these services.
I use a Hitachi VY-200a video printer hooked to my Toaster system that
works very nicely for color proofs off tape or my system.
Perhaps I can be of more help but I don't have any Hi-8 equiptment.
