Answer 1:
PCI is faster then VLB, VBL is faster then EISA, EISA is faster then ISA
This is just a simple way to look at it and alot depends on the type of cards
used(ie bus mastering).
ISA slots take only ISA 8/16 bit cards
EISA slots take EISA and ISA
PCI slots take PCI and I don't know if you can use them for anthing else
I have and EISA/ISA machine and a PCI/ISA machine I dont know how well the PCI
and EISA chips get along.
Answer 2:
An EISA board will not fit into an ISA slot.
An ISA board will both fit into and work in and EISA slot.
The PCI/EISA and PCI/ISA combination slots have separate and independent
connectors for PCI and (E)ISA cards which share nothing but the physical space
in the computer. Since the two buses are independent, there should be no PCI
performance penalty in using a PCI board in either configuration, all else
being equal.

For what I can tell, EISA is a goner. And PCI might go in the same direction.
Intel has been having NUMEROUS problems with their PCI architecture, and the
Local Bus 2.0 is just around the corner and will beat PCI. Not to mention that
Intel doesn't know where to take PCI.
If I were you, I'd stick to Local Bus, and ISA for a while longer.

I think that reply from Alex K. was totally off base, unfounded, and absurd.
While EISA may, _eventually_ lose to faster bus architectures, I doubt PCI will
die anytime soon.

Agree. I can't imagine how anybody could say that Intel doesn't know what to do
with the PCI bus. Not only Intel, but Apple and IBM for the PowerPCs, Digital
for the Alphas and the big companies for their highend Intel based stuff
ACTUALLY KNOWS where PCI is going. Not to talk about the manufacturers of
boards. While PCI is being integrated in multiple platforms, local bus seems to
be the choice for the lower end Intel equipment. AS you said, "absurd,
unfounded and totally off base". Sincerelly, I can't see serious highend
systems adopting VLbus (neither VLbus 2.0) as their bus of choice for highspeed
connections with the processor(s). IMHO, it has an image of not more that a way
to speed up flight simulators <g> Seriously, I don't like when someone gets
something bad and start to add patches and patches to make it go faster…
well, I don't like the idea.

You got it, John! 🙂 I don't have nothing against VLBus <g>. I simply think
that PCI is a better designed, more intelligent and elegant solution than VL
bus, not to talk about the money it will save to hardware developers (=cheaper
hardware) with its crossplatform compatibility.
