RiffGrabber just got a very positive review in Amazing Computing, which will be of interest to Amiga musicians who want to use Deluxe Music the way you'd like to use it: by playing live and having pitches and durations trascribed properly into common music notation. Nick

My vote goes to this combination. I have been using RiffGrabber with ]DM 2.0 for a while now, and they do work great together. Great job Nick! John & Rick a.k.a RAJH

Thanks for helping me toot my own horn. Now if we could only get a little cleanup-the-bugs upgrade on DMusic, we'd be cruisin' Glad to hear RiffGrabber's found a spot in your creative life! Nick

Rick, Rick (Arend, not you) and I have just been working on a 'riffgrab' inspired song. I just 'riffed', went back and forth with Dmusic2 a few times and wah-la..a song! I talked to EA about 2 months ago. They said that the programmer was working on other projects, and would let us know when he gets back to DM2.0. The "MIDI Rush" does get irritating sometimes. BTW does your player work? Mine plays the first note of the song and stops. Let me know if you hear from EA. I had talked to Orlando Guzman. Later, John

I've never even tried the DMusic player, sorry. I don't even think it's on my hard drive. I agree about the irritating MIDI rush, and I very much dislike having to manually drag the instruments all the way to the left so that they can kick in properly on some tunes (can't find a reason why some tunes ALWAYS have this problem, and some tunes NEVER do). Fixes I am much more worried about include improper accidental notation convention that is used (ie, an accidental holds for the duration of a measure ONLY for subsequent pitches that are in the SAME OCTAVE. So an A# in octave two, followed by an A in octave three does not notate the second A with a natural symbol. It should) Anyway, I do like DMusic a lot, and while DMCS gave me better printouts with CopyistCompanion and The Copyist, the use of RiffGrabber has locked me into DMusic2. Thanks for sharing the story about the 'riffgrab' inspired song. Digital mutlitracking the way it should be used! Nick

Nick, what IS Copyist Companion? I own both DMusic 2 and Copyist DTP v1.68 and while DMusic's input system is much more friedly than The Copyist's (which is one of the two reasons I bought DMusic in the first place) I'd still like to have The Copyist's printout quality… Thanks, // Chris coming in from Germany \X/ on AutoPilot 1.061……….

Boy I wish Copyist Companion worked on the new DMusic file format. What Copyist Companion did was read an old-style DMCS score file and write out a Copyist file. You could then load that Copyist file into The Copyist for final tweaking and beautiful printing. I wrote Copyist Companion because DMCS printing was so awful. The new DMusic's file format is completely different, so it would take a long time to do a rewrite. If Dmusic2's printout were just a LITTLE worse, I'd probably update CopyistCompanion to do it. But they did a pretty good job of printing with DMusic2 – too good to create a market for a new version of my program! Which is, well, good and bad I guess. Nick

Nick, you can register at least one potential customer (me) for an upgrade to Copyist Companion… yes, DMusic's printing is much better than DMCS's was but it is not what I had hoped to see…. so maddening to see them get SO CLOSE… (AutoPilot'ed from) JcP

Thanks, Jeff. I'll keep the CopyistCompanion rewrite in mind. If I could clone myself and sick the clone on this project… Nick

Nick, well, they DID a better job than they did with the original DMCS but it's still WAY behind what I can get from Copyist, so for people with DMusic2 who want high-quality printouts it would probably be the only choice, especially as Dr.T's seems to be doing a clearance sale at the moment (KCS 3.5 @ $49.95, TigerCub @ $19.95, Copyist DTP 1.6 @ $39.95, "M" @ $19.95, and the Phantom Interface (MIDI/SMPTE) @ $29.95). You fnd them in the MIDICVEND forum. I already have KCS and Copyist and have ordered the "M" composition/performance package and the Phantom interface for syncing to tape. BTW, you can list me under "potential Copyist Companion customer" if you find the time to do the update… // Chris coming in from Germany \X/ on AutoPilot 1.061……….

Thanks Christian, for the comments on a potential upgrade to Copyist Companion. I'll put you on the list of potential buyers, and look forward to a time when I can do it right. Nick

I have DMusic and use it with a tone generator instead of a MIDI keyboard. Therefore I have no "Performance" tool. My question is…would Riffgrabber help me? Can Riffgrabber import/convert MODs,for example, to DM2.0? In short, How would it benefit someone without a "performance" tool? Bob
#40521From: Nick DidkovskyApr 10, 1994 5:15 PM
RiffGrabber needs MIDI input to do its job. Anything that sends MIDI: a keyboard, MIDI guitar, or even another Amiga with a performance application like M or MusicMouse. RiffGrabber does not import and convert MOD files. It only imports music directly from DMusic via ARexx. So if your setup changes and you want to perform live and have your performace transcribed, that's what RiffGrabber will do for you. Best, Nick

Nick, You're welcome. Keep me informed of any enhancements to RG. John

Will do. Internal multitracking may be a RiffGrabber enhancement at some point. Nick
