#Out of Lurking Darkness

Hey -G,
Lookie what I found in the Lofter…
"ERROR IN FIND PATH
Pathpt:3 interps:1
OOOOPS!!! (on the little button)"
and then my trackball cursor and keyboard go away until I push the power or
reset button and start 3DS (r.3) again. Now you probly wanna know what a
seasoned old 3DS veteran like me (har-de-har) did to get to see this lovely
message.
Well O.K., loading one of those pesky project files, I created a 4 vertex, 0
steps, 8" long path. Got one round-cornered box from the shaper on the starting
vertex, then the same shape on the second vertex 1.5" up the path. A smaller
scale of the same box on the third vertex which was very near to the second
vertex, and an even smaller rounded box on the last vertex. Lofted the shape,
F3 to look, F2 to reset the path to it's 2 vertex, 5 step default, and
OOOOPS!!! there it is, that amusing little message box. I cold-booted and
repeated the steps just to see if that message would come back, and so I could
write it down for you. It did and I did.
So, wadaya think, huh? I was using the 486/66 Deskpro with 44 Mb, and I can
usually lock this baby up without any warning or cute little message, so I
really felt almost privileged, and, yes, even compelled to tell the world all
about this'n. Do I get a spayshul prize for finding this? Can you find that
message all by yourself?
And one more little item that's been buggin' me for months: What kind of
Intel-based machine made them Intel Inside commercials anyway? And what
software was used? Anyone???
Back into the shadows… lurking… watching… B.
It sounds like you completely confused the lofter by shoving those
differently-scaled versions of the cross-section so near to each other and then
resetting the path back to two vertices. You uncovered a debug message hidden
deep within the code (that are zillions of these within 3DS, in almost every
function). Congratulations… that's extremely difficult to find.
Re those Intel Inside spots… They're made by ILM, and mostly they use real
(LARGE) sets with cameras on cranes for them. Some of them use limited elements
rendered in CG as well, but the bulk of that stuff is real (not virtual).

<<It sounds like you completely confused the lofter>> …AT LONG LAST!!! I can
now retire to the open and welcome arms of sweet Morpheus with that warm, fuzzy
feeling of knowing I finally succeeded in confusing the module that for so long
has shown little mercy in confusing me (especially Deform/Fit, Scale and
Teeter).
Well then, is there a sure-fire method of avoiding the paralysis while
resetting the path to its default? I tried deleting the shapes, but not the
vertices… That's gotta be it, delete the offending proximate vertices, right?
Maybe I need more practice.
<<Congratulations… that's extremely difficult to find.>> …Thengyew veddy
much, I do try.
<<Re those Intel Inside spots… They're made by ILM>> … And I was so sure
they were Toasted or maybe even Apple droppings.
Off to find more of these amusing little "debug messages." … Into the
shadows…B.

Sombody told me it was Eletric Image on Macintosh for the Intel ads???
It's possible that some of that stuff was done with EI on the Mac, because John
Knowles (the author of Photoshop) works at ILM and is a HEAVY EI user. I
wouldn't be surprised at all.
