#Vol. 2 Issue 1
5 messages in this thread
Steve,
I received my first "issue" of Nautilus yesterday and am having lots of fun
with it. One question, do standard file types (i.e. GIF and MID) not
launch because of performance constraints? It would be great
(particularly under Windows 3.1) to be able to launch appropriate applets
or other programs from within Nautilus.
A suggestion for the MPC catalog section. In cases where a package has
been available in DOS format it would be nice to see upgrade information
where available.
For whoever is handling the MPC section I have an additional piece of
information. The Compton's entry is a little out-of-date. When I called
for information I found out that Regina Lowe (listed as the contact) was no
longer there and that I was calling the wrong office. The correct office
to call for CD-ROM info is in San Diego, 1-800-532-3766.

Suzzanne,
Thanks much for your comments. I'll take the ones that are my
responsibility to heart and forward the others.
Here are my responses to your specfic points:
>…do standard file types (i.e. GIF and MID) not launch…
GIF doesn't lauch because it isn't a MMWin supported file format so we'd
have to distribute a viewer for it. That's not out of the question but all
of the .GIF, .TIF and .PIC formats are just the same .DIB image in a
different format for subscribers who'd like to use the image for something
other than a pretty picture on NAUTILUS. Re: .MID files. All of the files
on Vol 2, Iss 1 should launch from the shell (if you have an MPC sound
card) with the exception of HORNPIPE.MID. It has too many voices for the
MIDI chip on the sound card. Due to a production error (mine) the text
file explaining that doesn't appear in the shell. It is, however on the
disc in the SBYTES directory called MIDIINFO.TXT. We're working on
providing some free use run time programs (ie. viewers) so that you can
view/launch apps from the shell. More on that for Vol 2, Iss 3!
>…A suggestion for the MPC catalog…
Thanks for the DOS upgrade suggestion! Our first pass at the Toolbook
version of the MPC Titles Catalog was just a "conversion" of the MPCMC's
print version. As you noticed, we weren't able to acquire all of the
images in a usable format pre-press time. (But the rest are on the way!)

I'll fix the Compton's entry tomorrow! Thanks for the update.
Thanks again for your comments (I love to talk about this product!)!
Let me know if you have any other comments or questions.

I understand that for some people you would need to provide the viewer but
would it be possible to check the WIN.INI extension section to see if a
viewer was already specified? Depending on how your code works that would
probably be an easier solution.
Suzanne,
Not a bad idea. We might be able to allow configurable viewers via WIN.INI
if we don't/can't provide them.
