/* Is there anything closer to the Virginia area? */ Not to my knowledge, but you might contact the user groups (ACAD) listed in the NAAUG guide. Call Kim Starling at 415-491-8480 for the groups in Virginia.. perhaps one of them has a BBS. -dave

>>perhaps one of them has a BBS. -dave<< That's true here, Dave. I run the Kansas City 3D Studio User's Group, and we have a pretty huge BBS for 3DS already (been on a week). It's called the Rendering Plant, and the number is 816-525-5614. We have 4 sysops getting meshes and textures in many ways (scanning, converting from other platforms, creating, etc.). The main thing for me is organization and clear descriptions – hopefully have things pretty good on that count within a month or so. Jim

Tell me you're registered with the North American Autodesk User Group so that people in the organization know of you. We need your name in the contacts list. Call Kim Starling at NAAUG center at 415-491-8480 to make sure you folks are in there. Does Rendering Plant carry any echoes? We have several 3DS groups online with PCGnet (since the 3DS conference kicked off here two weeks ago). If you folks are interested in offering a Compuserve alternative (I like C$ but not everybody does), give Jim Witt a call at the PCGnet hub (Pheonix), BBS number there is 602-952-0638, leave a message for him. We'd love to have you jump on the "free" bandwagon, and your tappers might appreciate the NAAUG programs we have here on CIS or on PCGnet including telecourses on 3DS and ANI. -dave

Getting on PCGNet is a big priority for the Rendering Plant BBS. It'll be a little while before I'm comfy with the bbs software and the add-on to set up the mail grabbing event, but I hope to put it together before the end of May. If I can get one of the other sysops to work on it, maybe sooner <G>! >>If you folks are interested in offering a >>Compuserve alternative (I like C$ but >> not everybody does), I like both! >>give Jim Witt a call at the PCGnet hub (Pheonix), >>BBS number there is 602-952-0638, leave a message >> for him. Yes, I've been getting those (they're on line already!), and the NAAUG files are really great. We are indeed very interested in being a part of PCGNet. I'll leave Jim a messsage when I log on to the Phoenix board. Thanks for your comments – Jim

>>Is there anything closer to the Virginia area?<< I don't know of any. However, long distance in-state usually costs more than long distance out of state. So unless there was a BBS right in your town, you're best off with one that is out of state. I pay $6/hour on AT&T's Reach out America plan. The hours are basically 7pm to 7am weekdays and all weekend, which is perfect for me. If you'd like to get on a TERRIFIC 3DS-oriented BBS, call the Rendering Plant at 816-525-5614. Over 2300 files already, and we've only been online a few days. Probably >700 meshes now, lots from Internet. We're not keeping the crappy ones – we want to keep the board's quality level high (rather than quantity level…). Within a few months we'll have the most comprehensive way to find and access every mesh and texture on line. There will be catalog page GIFs of every mesh, texture, and image, and the file descriptions will contain counts for vertices and faces. Our goal is to be the best animator-oriented file and information resource around. Jim Lammers

Hi Jim, Do you know the FTP Sites that contain 3DStudio Files? Such as Mesh, Textures, Anim Result, and other cool stuff. I can't connect to BBS from here, too expensive. [D [D Thanks in Advance, Izak.

>>Do you know the FTP Sites that contain 3DStudio Files? There are a bunch of places that have different qualities of files… the service our BBS is trying to provide is to sort of pre-screen, correct, and document the ones worth keeping. Avalon at China Beach is a good place to find a lot of stuff, but it's older. There are some posts on PCGNet (and indeed on the internet itself in the CG area) that give out tons of 3D-oriented sites. Again, it's catch-as-catch-can… You may find some textures at one, and some Wavefront OBJ objects at another. Can you convert them to a format that 3DS can use? Is it worth the trouble? Are the files any good after you can finally visually evaluate them? It all takes time, and that's why the Rendering Plant BBS exists. If you can't find the CG site list on internet, I'll check with the other sysops and see if I can provide you with some more info. I think there may even be some good site lists on line at TRP BBS, but I'm not where I can check it right now. Thanks Jim

Jim: Sounds like a great BBS! I'll be calling today! Greg Pyros

>>Sounds like a great BBS! I'll be calling today! Great! We're getting there, keep in mind that we're still sort of 'under construction.' That's why our directory of directories is so disorganized, we can't resort it every time a new area is created for files… It should be pretty constant in a month or two, when the areas settle out. We have a bunch of people interested in SGI, Lightwave, Infini-D and some others, but they haven't really started talking with us yet – when they do, there'll be a bunch of new areas for them too. Hope to have PCGNet online soon also – it has some 3DS specific echos on it. BTW, I love your (and your coauthor's) book. What a value! I'm promoting it on the BBS also. Everyone I know who got it is very happy, and we'll all probably be digesting it for a few months to come… Let me know if you have some ideas for improvement of the BBS – Thanks, Jim
