Greg, Being that I'm backing into acad via 3ds3 I'm learning that dxf isn't always a blessing when it comes to modeling from contract docs! My dwg files balloon up by almost 100%! I guess I was expecting to be able to export to the shaper by turning off layers using the Layer dialogue box to elliminate all those items I,ve grown to avoid thinking about(details, details, details) Leaving just proposed structure . I've become an erase..window..crossing kinda guy! It's ironic that I used to work so hard to create this kind of mess now I'm a minimalist! I've been importing dxf files to Coreldraw to generate reliable shapes to put in the shaper. This procedure makes corelldraw sooooo sloooow! Should I clean up the dwg in acad then increase the capacity of the lofter in the 3ds.est file and skip coreldraw? Thanks, Gary

Gary, I'm not sure that I understand all of your problems (but who does anyway <g>), but here are two releated comments: DXF files don't grow up over the DWG files if you have AutoCAD create binary DXF files. Turning off layers does not keep the elements from being written to the DXF file. The DXF is a complete representation of the DWG contents and therefore also includes currently invisible objects. To select only specific entities, use the entities option of DXFout. Dietmar

Gary, I've used large DXF files a lot to import buildings into 3DS from ACAD. Here are some tips. In AutoCAD make a block of every layer, then you do a write block of each layer-block creating a seperate drawing for each entity. This way you can make a DXF file for each layer (or for some groups of layers). (much easier then typing a list of entities you want to make a DXF of. (This is not always necessary but with very large drawings it is the easiest way I think) Then you can import all DXF files one by one in 3DS, and you will loose the Out of memory problem. But you will probably have to quit 3DS a few times saving the already imported DXF files. This does avoid the out of memory problem and lets you import large DXF files split up in 3DS. Christophe,

Christophe, << ACAD DXF loading in 3DS improvements.. >> After reviewing the wishlist for R4, I can assure you that there were many, many wishes along these lines.. thanks.. jonas

Jonas, Acad DXF loading in 3ds is a wish. Does Visual link help this problem at all? Thanks, Gary

Gary, << Visual Link help in the AutoCad -> 3ds? >> 3ds will have a 64K face or vertice limit no matter what. Visual Link won't help that. Look in the index of the 3dsr3 ref man under ".dxf … loading, merging, and tips". jonas[adesk]

Christophe, good advice of an old arch. master! I never imported _that_ much of data in 3DS till now, but good to know. BTW, there is a letter on the way to Belgium…. (this time I'm serious!) BTW 2, did you check 'STEREO.GIF' in Lib 9 ? (Should look familiar to you…. I hope you have some red/blue glases). take care. – Alexander.
