I need some help and replies from the experts on what to do here. I a fairly
ambitious 3ds3 user doing accident reconstruction and flying logo type work for
video. My supervisors are making noises that they would like to get me a
Pentium machine. They've heard the word "Pentium" and think it's a big deal and
the latest and best thing. I'm greatful they want to keep me in good hardware,
but I've heard that reved up 486 machines are better with 3D studio. Also what
other features should I be looking for in a good PC animation compute What are
some of your ideas? It looks like they've got around $7000 for the new system.
I need to give them some direction and this forum is the fist place I came.

get the fastest processor available at the time you buy. That would seem to be
a Pentium 66 or even a Pentium 90. All the 3ds "heavy hitters" I know are
buying Pentiums so that's where I'd go. If you are doing video resolution
output you'll probably need a large SCSI II hardrive (2 gigs, or so) and a
minimum of 32MB of RAM. If you are doing flic resolution stuff (320×200 256
colours) then you may get by with half of that amount of RAM and a quarter of
the disk space. Get some way of backing it all up (DAT 2/4 gb drives are
cost-effective) and a nice big 17" or more monitor (your eyes will thank you).

The machine that comes close to what Martin Foster is describing is currently
available from Micron and is a standard configuration labelled "Platinum." The
price is also right in your range. With your 486 as a render slave you could
seriously increase your productivity.

I had the same type of questions Kevin had about a month ago & I think Bob's
advice is right on – I haven't seen an add for a 90 MHs Micron Pentium yet in
the PC Mags, but that's what I'm waiting for (I have driven one of their poor
sales reps nuts with questions – but he is quite responsive & rather good
natured about it all – his name is Jim Burton).
I recently read that Intel redesigned the Pentium & the 90+ systems will be
3.3V systems – which is why I'm waiting (not wanting a lot of heat problems).

You're right about the 3.3 volt P5/90s. My friend just ordered one from Micron
yesterday. They said it would be five weeks before delivery, but they swore up
and down on that date (I know, I know… <g>).
