Hello All,
I got a deal on an unlimited license for Amiga unix 2.1 and couldn't turn
it down. Of course this is only a deal if I can get it working. Which so
far I can't. I have an A3000, w/16MB Fast and 2MB chip and am using a
Quantum PD210S drive. The install works for a while and then just quits.
Usually it is with a a buss error (dd something during a write) and then
I'm dead. I hit return and the script tries to fix the kernal with a
kernal patch, but the files aren't there, so nothing can be done. Anyone
got a clue how I might try addressing this? (Apart from burning the tape
and/or actively pursuing all those who claimed that this was a product
ready for sale, dipping them in liquid nitrogen, tapping them hardily with
a hammer and watching the flesh thaw? [just kidding of course]).

You have a stupid WD chip (HD controller chip on the A3000 motherboard).
It is probably a -04 or -04 proto. Current is like -08 or -09 or
something. Upgrade that socketed chip and you will be in business.
BTW, if you find a good source for the chips cheap (i.e., other than an
Amiga dealer), let me know, cause I could use another one or two (though
I'm not actively looking right now).
Half of Randell's (AmigaDOS's) SCSI drivers seems to be workarounds for
WD bugs. Unix is not as tolerant. The later, less buggy chips work much
better.
I think this problem isn't such common knowledge because most people who
bought Unix bought it pre-installed and the problem doesn't seem to bother
typical HD use, just tape install.

Since WD is 'just down the street' what's the likelyhood that they
would have some?
