#Pentium rendering rates

Jonas, I'm considering getting a Pentium-based system. So, I'd like to know how much faster it is compared to, let's say, a DX2 or 50 mHz system. Have any idea? -Gregory MacNicol

By my experience the P5/60's render @ twice as fast as the 486DX2 66s, which are definitely faster than the 50s. I think the P5/66s are @ 10% faster than the 60s, and the new P5/90s, due in 5-7 weeks, well… John Tissavary (LUNA cie)

And even on a dual-voltage Pentium board, I was under the impression that there were different pin-outs, the new faster Pentiums being smaller? No personal experience yet. John

Gus, It seems that, since it uses some sort of double clocking technology, we can plug right in a 90-100MHz new 3.3v Pentium right on the 60MHz CPU board. Do you know if this is absolutely true? If not, I am wondering if Intel will be selling the chips individuals (according to PC magazine, it seems that they will do it). In fact, since the DECs can support up to 150MHz Alphas, it seems that the chip will hold any Pentium ship up to the same frequency (at least, "temperaturely" speaking 🙂 ana /krazy images

I don't know about chip availability. If they do what they've always done, a single user won't be able to get it for quite a while. Only fully built boards. In fact, Intel doesn't like anyone selling retail other than themselves. That's the reason for those "Overdrive" chips. Regarding the Alpha, it runs at 75MHz. The 150 is speed doubling within the chip just like the x86.

Maybe someone here can investigate and provide with some (an-ge-loooo? <g>). It thought it was a pure 150MHz thing. I am wondering if digital is planning to get a 200MHz AXP on it as well (since it seems that a Pentium 100MHz will be faster than the AXP in interger operations _according_ to Digital itself!). ana /krazy images

Sherwood: The DX4's are not interchangeable with the 486/66's. Different pin outs, different package, different voltages. Evan

well i checked and the dx4 can come with a resistor betwen the chip and the socket reducing the voltage to 3.3. saw it somewhere, and my deaker said he read it somewhere to. anyway thanks for the response. sherwood

Ofcourse, we can have what ever someone wants in it. For instance I just put together a P90 w/64MB, 1024x768x24 bit, 17" monitor, 1.1 GB HDD, 4mm Turbo DAT system together for a 3DS customer of mine.
