Hard Drive Errors
6 messages in this thread
My Quamtum 210 is exhibiting a problem. It continually produces read/write
errors. I have even gone so far as to re-low level formatted it and when
copying my files back over, the requester box (read/write error) still pops
up. The drive is about 4 months old and this is the first problem I've had
with it. I am assuming it has a bad block (or more), but don't know how to
go about mapping it/them out so that the drive will be usable again. Any
help with this problem will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Allen

What machine are you using the drive on and with what controller… and is
it internal or external, is it the only HD in the system or one of _X_? And
physically, where is it on the scsi bus?

Michael,
I am using a CMB 2091 controller with the latest ROMs. My boot
disk is a Quantum 80 meg HD that is causing no problems at all. I am not
sure of the SCSI device numbers for the Quantum 80 and the (problem drive)
Quantum 210 (which is causing me concern because I need to know that to do
a low level format, correct?).
Thanks for any help!
Allen
Oh.. I forgot to mention, I am using an Amiga 2000. How can I tell what
the SCSI device number is for each of the drives?

Allan:
The CBM controller software, (HDToolbox?) will scan the bus and tell you
what drives and scsi device #'s are online. Are both of your hard drives
internal? If all you did was install the 210 meg HD w/o changing the scsi
address, you probably have a conflict. Look for three jumpers labeled A0,
A1, A2 on the drives and be sure that the settings are not identical.
Those jumpers indicate binary address settings where: A0=1, A1=2, A2=4.
Quantums usually ship with the addres set to 6 (A2, A1 jumped). You can
make one of the scsi addresses 5 by setting the jumpers to A2,A1.
Hope this helps.

Allen,
I'll be working late tonight (probably), give me a call at my office, I
seem to remeber you're local. (714) 253-2833….I'll see if I can help.
