Just to clarify things a bit… 3D Studio was the first non-SGI 3D animation system used in a feature film to do full-screen effects. Six minutes of (said) effects will be in Johnny Mnemonic, coming from TriStar/Sony in June. Lightwave has never been used to do full-screen feature film effects. Additionally, 3DS is used by some of the largest 3D animation production houses in Los Angeles, including Metrolight, R/Greenburg Assoc., Boss Films, RezN8, and Sony Pictures. I don't believe that Lightwave is being used at any of these facilities. Trying to keep the facts straight, – G

Both 3D Studio and Lightwave are very full-featured programs and I feel confident that you would be happy with either one. Before you purchase either one do ALOT of research. Find out what extra costs are incurred to get you where you want to be capability-wise. I'm sure you can find both NewTek and Autodesk dealers that will let you test drive the software before you buy it in there showrooms. Lightwave and 3D Studio have been used in quite a few Hollywood productions. Since the Yost Group has kindly posted some projects that 3D Studio has/is involved in, let me list some Lightwave projects. You shouldn't really base your decision on my or Gary's lists, but rather how well suited each program is to you tastes and production style.
