#SCSI PAR a go-go!

FYI Dept…
I was informed by DPS today that the new SCSI PAR "will be available in 30
days"! Pricing has not yet been determined.

I'm excited to hear that PAR is going SCSI. I am feeling a bit burnt
since I called them a couple of weeks back and spoke with one of their reps
asking specifically if they were going to be coming out with a SCSI version-
especially since we were going to be buying a completely new computer system
and wanted to buy the best stuff for it.
After I got off the phone it was clear to me that I would have to
purchase IDE drives (I went with the Micropolis 2217A's) in order to run the
PAR board on my system.
And now this information comes out. I wish I had gotten a name from the
rep who fed me the bad info. You'd think employees within a company would be
aware of a product coming out so soon.
Well, maybe a good side effect will be that the IDE version of the PAR will
come down in price once the SCSI version becomes the new flagship of the
company.

Getting information from them is like pulling teeth! You really have to be
persistant, or they'll give you the cold shoulder treatment. Maybe they're
understaffed or something…I don't know.
As for the price of the IDE dropping? I wouldn't be surprised if they just
priced the SCSI
higher, at least until the competition catches up with them (won't be long
now). Of course, alot of guys will want to unload their IDE's and buy SCSI's,
so you could get a deal that way.

10 bit, I could have sworn they said 720 x 486 or maybe it was 752 x 486
resolution, CCIR601 was in there so I think that's 720 x 486.
There was mention of PCI for the Board and using SCSI Drives.

James, the bottom line here is not whether the new PAR uses SCSI but what will
be the new BLF factors and ultimate compression ratios with present SCSI
drives? Also what will be the new record QF with the TBC IV? the best I get
now is only 15 with any regularity. Would be nice to get 23 and BLF's of 300
or so for video frame grabs. This is what will make me sit up and take notice,
not whether it is PCI or SCSI or nubus etc. !

Heard any word on newer faster IDE's for the PAR, there's quite a few out there
and I'm wondering how this is going to be addressed. I think the SCSI solution
is going to be significantly higher cost wise, which could keep the IDE PAR in
good stead for alot of people, provided there are newer faster replacements.
Seems however, 1 bit per disk arrays are becoming increasingly popular, with
falling prices as well…
Just curious as I know you've got an interest in all this…

I've been watching and the only thing I've heard lately is Mode 5, ie 11megs
XSFR rate is scheduled for June or July release from WD. I'll be at Comdex in
a few weeks and I plan to do some asking around.

Sounds good Don. It would seem that there are more than a few setups that could
benefit from these kinds of performance figures, like D/Vision and Fast
systems.

Fast uses SCSI II or SCSI wide on their DPR.

excellent! I may be able to get one for our shop. I particularly like the move
to 720×486, which is more in line with the work we are doing. The move to SCSI
drives is good, to allow greater supply of drives.

I just posted the FAQ for the Perception Video Recorder in the hardware lib
section. I have seen some wrong info here, so you should check the FAQ. BTW
the ship date is in June.

Are you saying that they are *now* shipping the SCSI units or that they are
promoting the SCSI version in the IDE board boxes?!? You lost me!

I beleive you meant to address this to someone else but I'll answer.
I'ts supposed to be shipping in the current boxes of the the regular Par units.
The Notice, not a new type of unit.

DPS has info in the boxes of current shipping PARS. The new product is called
Perception Video. It is PCI based, SCSI and uses 10bit encoding.

that sounds awesome! I can't wait to see/hear more. Maybe they'll be showing it
at NAB. Unfortunately, I probably can't go because of production commitments.
