Hi All:
Does anyone have any experience upgrading from a 486 to a Pentium Overdrive
processor with regard to 3DS performance? I have a 486DX/2 now and am
contemplating the upgrade to the new 63MHz Overdrive. I have heard that the
faster FPU makes a big difference in the regular Pentium processors compared to
the 486. In fact, since 3DS makes frequent use of the FPU, it is said that
moving to a (60MHz) Pentium can give a minimum 4X speed improvement. Does this
match the experience of people on this forum? I have heard that the faster FPU
is also present in the Overdrive.

a Pentium will render about twice as fast as a 486, clock speed for clock
speed. That's because 3ds is not optimized for the Pentium – actually, I know
of no software that is. Maybe the next version …. who knows?
I'd buy the overdrive chip from a place that allowed 30-day money-back
guarantee. That way if it fails to perform you could replace it with a new
motherboard and CPU, which might not be much more money any way.

I don't have the 63mhz chip you have described but the comparison I am able to
make between a 486/66 and a 586/66 seems to give me a 100% speed increase. I
doubt that the 63mhz chip could be 4x as fast as the 486/66, my experience
suggests 2x. If anyone can verify that 4x is the answer I'll be snapping up
one of those new chips immediately.
