#Anim 1.3a & 3ds 3.0 flcs
14 messages in this thread
I probably just missed something but I recently updated my Animator Pro to 1.3a
and when I open a flc that was written by 3DS 3.x and do any edits, I can't
save the flc. Animator tells me that the flc is corrupted. Anybody know what
I'm doing wrong?

I haven't heard this before. What happens if you load the FLC file, and then
SAVE it immdieatly. Can you then edit the saved version proerly? What about if
you save it to a new name?
If you want to salvage your FLC file, load it into AAPRO, use NUMPIC to save to
a series of GIF files, start a NEW flic, and then use NUMPIC to importthose GIF
files, save the FLC.
If you want to send me a _small_ FLC file that exhibits this behavior, I will
load it on my machine and see if I get the same error.

Thanks. I thought about numpic but didn't have the time to do that… what I
DID do was simply not do anything else in Anim Pro and let it load the flic
from the temporary files. I was able to play it, etc. I just can't save it…
not as any name. I will do some more testing. I'm afraid that I will have to
make the flic again from 3DS to send you one. It's not that large.
It could be this machine and/or graphics card… which has changed since the
last time I did this. P90 with an STB Nitro…

Craig, Brian is right. If you can load it into ANi, the _fastest_ method would
be export the frames as individual frames and reassemble from scratch. Serious.
we know 3DS works, we know ANI works… why experiment with this? file
corruption happens. If NUMPIC fails, the problem is bigger than you suspect.

I made the movie TWICE. The same error occurred. It is not file corruption. It
is a problem with this machine or a compatability (software bug) problem, or a
problem with my methodology.

okay. i must be misunderstanding the nature of the problem here. my impression
was that you had generated a movie in 3DS, you had loaded it into AniPro, were
able to look at it in AniPro, but then you couldn't save it in AniPro. the
suggestion was to use NUMPIC to save the flic out as individual frames rather
than a "movie", restart AniPro session from scratch (as in exit completely and
restart application), then use NUMPIC to reassemble the movie using NUMPIC and
saving to flic. curious, what are your hardware specs? -dave
Dave:
Yep. I'm going to do the numpic thingo if I can't figure out what the problem
is.
This is a P90, 32M, STB Nitro.
It may be a VESA mode incompatability…
The first place I'm going to look it the graphics card.

Nothing to incredible there. This _is_ weird. 🙂

okay. if none of these suggestions work, got a spare good ol'VGA card laying
around you could test it with? In fact, does the thing run in 320×200 mode
(VGA)? -dave
Dave:
The only two things that have changed are the computer (from a Dx66 with a
Genoa VL24) to a P90 with an STB Nitro and an upgrade from Animator Pro 1.3 to
1.3a. Prior to these two changes everything worked fine.

have you tried the Genoa card with the P90? 🙂 (sorry, but i had to ask). i
have been on 1.3a for months and months… i'm suspecting hardware or
configuration at this point. Also, save your CONFIG.SYS as something else, and
try a barebones one:
FILES=40 BUFFERS=40 SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM /E:512 /P
erase the AA.CFG file in the animator directory and run from scratch (cold
boot) does it work in VGA mode? -dave
Dave:
I was running with nothing in the config.sys file except files and buffers. I
didn't need the shell because I don't have that many paths to set when running
3DS.
I'm not interested in disabling two computers to get to the bottom of this
right now…
I can bypass the Nitro by running in standard VGA. It's just a matter of taking
the time to track this down.

I am new at this, so be patient. I recently took a class with 3dstudio and
Animator Pro. My problem is that I am not able to find anywhere to buy Animator
Pro or any books on it. Please help me with some information. Stores that I
go too say it has been discontinued.
Thanks, CV

Animator Pro has not been discontinued. Also, it is not sold through regular
retail computer stores. You must contact an Authorized Autodesk Multimedia
dealer. Call 800-964-6432 to find a dealer in your area. If you are still a
student, make sure you ask for a dealer that is also an Educational Reseller.

P.S. The product they are probably thinking of is the original Animator, which
has been discontinued, and used to be sold at any computer store.
I had a similiar problem with one of the 3D Studio flc's on the CD-ROM that
came with Ani Pro. I had noticed that while the program was loading the flc
the busy light was on quite a bit longer than other animations of the same
size. I talked with a hardware tech about this thinking that perhaps something
was wrong with my CD drive but he took one look at the Ani Pro CD-ROM wiped it
with a cloth and placed it back in the drive and it worked fine.
