We did a still rendering in 3D Studio of one our projects and people do
think that it's a photo. We're a design, engineering, and construction
firm in Irvine, CA. We specialize in entertainment facilites: recording
studios, video studios, etc. Right now we're finishing up a TV station in
Burbank. I'm trying to put together a walkthrough mixed with actual video
for the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) show this March in Las
Vegas. Our firm is having a booth there. But anyways, the still that I
was talking about was for a Post-Production studio for a company called
Editel in Chicago. The still ended up in Millimeter magazine for a story
on these particular types of rooms. One of the best aspects of the render
was that for the mixing console we scanned the brochure of the actual
console and applied it as a decal to a model of a console. Looks pretty
cool with all the buttons lit up. In fact the spotlights that shined on
the console actually made the buttons brighter, as in real life.

P.S.: What happened to that utility you were going to Email me?
Chris,
I've been considering using 3ds for architectural renderings, but haven't
seen too many "really" good examples. More important, 3ds seems a little
difficult to use when creating architectural models.
Are you creating your models in 3ds, and if so, how fast can you create
them? Can you upload some samples?
I'm not too far from you (San Juan Cap), maybe we can get together.
Steve
Steve, if you haven't seen enough great examples of architectural
renderings in 3DS, you haven't downloaded the PCA images, including the
kitchen they did for This Old House. Those are interiors, and I'm thinking
of uploading a couple of Michael Sechman's skyscraper exteriors this
weekend (if anyone's interested).

PS: The PCA images are in DL9.. Browse *.gif.
definatly interested……. sherwood
I'm going to upload them now, and they should be merged by Monday sometime.
Watch for:
HIRISE.GIF: A 45-story skyscraper done by Michael Sechman
of Oakland.
ATRIUM.GIF: The lobby of this structure, also by Michael S.
MTHOME.GIF: The living room of a 35,000 sq.ft. mansion in
Aspen, Colorado, by Jim Biebl of Carbondale, CO.
These three images are all _as photorealistic as they come_. Check it
out…

Thanks Gary!
I'll check them out.

Actually I think 3DS is great. You can pretty easily achieve some very
nice results with the renderer, in addition you can animate the thing. I
have only done some basic walkthroughs with the Keyframer (if you didn't
know, that's the module of 3DS that composes the animations) by just moving
the camera along a path, but there are a tone more features in it that I
haven't even touched yet.
I create my models in AutoCAD, not just because the working drawings, say
maybe a floor plan are already done, but it's just more manageable and
easier to be more acurate. This project that I mentioned, the TV studio in
Burbank, I was able to go from floor plan to almost finished model in about
a day and a half. Let's see I started last Thursday at about 1:00 (that's
1:00 p.m.) and finish most of it up on Friday. (That includes countless
interuptions) Luckily there were interior elevations already drawn for
this project. So I just created all my faces right on top of the
elevations, wblocked them, and just plopped them on to the floor plan. I
then added the faces for the floors, then the ceilings, which by the way
most were just copied from the floor. Even the stairs were a breeze. Just
make a face for a riser and a face for a tread and then just do a copy
multiple and snap to the outline of the stairs that were on the elevations.
There's even lisp programs to turn a 3d polyline into a handrail. Now all
I have to do is get the lighting and materials going. But with a color
scanner that is pretty simple too. For instance, there's marble on the
floor. I scanned the actual marble sample, tweeked the scanned image a
bit, and voila.
In response to your other question, sure we could get together, in fact
I've even heard of your company. Give me a call Monday morning, 770-6601.

im still looking for it….. i thought i had it here ….
Sherwood:
I understand. I got the problem fixed (see Kevin Krell's response). But
I'd still like that utility and also see what your config and autoexec
files look like.
Thanks,
Chris Yanchar
ok great , i new Kevin Krell could help you , he is the best in hardware
and software to talk to. he has helped me alot!.
as sone as i find it i will send it to you e-mail … monday.
