3D Artists & Animators would like to talk to individuals in the following states to see what 3DA&A and NAAUG can do to help users of Autodesk Multimedia products establish new users groups in these states: South Carolina Alaska Minnesota Oklahoma Virginia Arkansas Montana Oregon Maryland Hawaii Nebraska Rhode Island New York Idaho Nevada Texas Delaware Utah New Hampshire Vermont Alabama Indiana North Dakota Washington (state) Mississippi Kansas South Dakota West Virginia Louisiana Maine Ohio Wyoming There are no 3D Studio/Multi Media Users Group Contacts for these states listed with NAAUG as of this date. I run the Oregon (Portland) 3ds user group. I could have sworn I filed it with you guys. I know it is registered with Adesk. Anyway, what is it you want to know/do?

Hi Tim, It is our intention to help promote 3DS users groups in areas which do not have groups yet for one reason or another. I went by the current listing of NAAUG, 3D Studio, Users Group Contacts and none were listed for the states I mentioned, Oregon included. Perhaps you should contact Toby at NAAUG to be recognised. We are looking for new groups to form under the banner 3DAA__. We hope to have a national newsletter later this year. We are also kicking around some other exciting ideas which will help unify the 3DS user community. As of this time there are 3 chapters of 3DA&A, the original group in Tampa run by Jeff Reisner, 3DAANC run by Dave Boddy in North Carolina, my group, 3DAACT, here in Connecticut, and there is a possible forth group in South Carolina being formed. I hope this has helped answer some of your questions. It is good to hear that you have a group already in place. Perhaps you'll consider affiliation. We hope to bring a new meaning to the phrase "Strength in Numbers". I will make sure Jeff drops you a message to further help explainour intentions. -Lee

Hi Lee, Could you explain to me the difference between a NAAUG 3DS user group, and a 3DA&A group? FWIW, I am located on the border of ND and MN. Paul S.

I'm not sure that there IS any diferance. We are hoping to make our group 100% NAAUG membership. We are just promoting a little more contact between groups. Some ideas have been a national newsletter with news from all groups and a yearly reel showing the best of each group which would be voted on by each individual group then compiled and edited into one reel. I would like to see a stronger support in MultiMedia by NAAUG like posibly having a video wall at events like Siggraph and Autodesk U where people could come and sit down and watch different submissions from all the groups. Not to undermind Autodesks' annual reel but have time to show all the yearly reels from all the groups. Kind of like the Asoft party at Sig'94 where anyone with the guts can step up to the pump and show their stuff. Anyway, I really wasn't suggesting that our group was THAT much different, only in that we are taking a much more active roll in getting the support out to the users. The other difference is that we are trying to be open minded in the fact that most 3DSers' use other software in chorus with 3D Studio to get the job done. We want to bring those issues to the table as well by not making it an exclusive club for 3DS only, i.e. 3DA&A instead of 3DS u.g. You would be surprised what a person who has only used Photoshop might have to offer or what a person who has worked several years as a cell animator might offer. We hope to get all these people out and to the table to share their experience and to draw upon the experiences of others. Another service we have provided some of the vendors is showing full production style demos of their products to the groups. As a result those vendors save money in their own promotion and the street level users get a better understanding in the form of a hands-on demo of exactly what the newest software will do. Hope this helped clear things up. -Lee

It sounds intriguing. I will wait for the note from Jeff, and bring up the idea at the next meeting for review.

Thanx Tim, Perhaps Jeff and I could send you some back issues of our newslettes so you could see what we're up to. Lee

I would have no problem with that. (more info, newsletters, et. al.)

As I understand it, there is a 3D Studio users group in Austin, TX that meets every last Wednesday of the month. Is this perhaps not a "recognized" NAAUG user's group?

As I had said I only had the latest NAAUG newsletter to go by and the states I had mentioned have no "Contact" listed in the catagory of 3D Studio. It does not cost anything to contact Toby at NAAUG and become a 3D Studio User Contact. As far as our group goes, we are simply trying to increase the user support and promote the shareing of insight into the program, much like this forum only "face to face". There are a lot of people out there using the program who don't use CompuServe, Internet, or a modem for that matter. The "Towne Meeting" so to speak is a means of bringing the news to them as well as finding out what tricks they have up their sleeves. Lee

Lee, I am currently establishing the South Carolina 3ds users group in Charleston. Autodesk is aware that the group is being formed, if there is anything that you would like to know I would more than happy to reply. We will hold our first meeting at the end of the month or in May. Things are going slow but steady, I am trying to work time in around my teaching schedule to work time in for the group. BTW The school at which I am employed is Trident Technical College, we are an Authorized Autodesk Training Center, we currently teach AutoCAD and will start teaching 3ds in the summer. Roy – Not relevant to this topic but please say hello to my uncle, Wayne Whelan, Dean of Continuing Education at Trident. He is an excellent host to all his travelling relatives especially when the blizzards here in Maine get too bad in the winter. Tell him Joe is beginning to teach AutoCad where he works and loves it. I've been trying to get Wayne on Compuserve or at least the Internet but no luck so far! Nice to see the college on here. Anne
