TPC easy to install? I am sitting 2 h follow your description and it is still
not working. This is not your fault, because you did the job which the
programmer of TCP had to do and not the user. I have very seldom seen such a
uncomfortable and confusing installation. I have not found any icon to start
TCP nor any hint how to start it. Think this programm is from engineers for
engineers. The more I work with Compuserve and Internet, I come to the
solution, that the best will be to run Compuserve on a PC.
To answer your following question:

The problem isn't as much one of poor design or little concern for users as you
might think. Sure, there are things which can be done to make it easier, but
most are "special case" things that can't apply to everyone's situation.
The real problem is that when you sit down to use a word processor, you have
some idea of what you are supposed to do because you have used a typewriter
before. With the Internet, you have no idea what to do because you haven't
done anything like it before. That's why so much of my book is background
information and explanations of what is going on — not to make you more of an
engineer, but to let you know what has to be done and why. When you know what
has to be done and why (whether with a word processor or with the Internet),
*how* becomes *much* easier.

I haven't actually tried hooking up to the net, just played with the TCP
and Mosaic I've downloaded, but…
TCP doesn't have an icon, I think it's started from the CLI by typing
"Startnet" (a script in AmiTCP/bin). It brings up a big message, after a delay
you click the "okay" and then you start AMosaic.

I tried anything to get TCP starting. If I execute "Startnet" in bin, nothing
is happend. It is just executing, but no other screen.
If I start AMITCP (the main program) I got the screen with the large message
you told about. If you click OK, than the screen disapears and nothing else
will happen.
I wonder if anybody has a idea how the things work.

Yes, that is exactly what I get. But after the AmiTCP screen goes away you
can run AMosaic from an icon. Also some other programs seem to work the same
way (Gopher and talk). They won't run without AmiTCP being started first.
I don't think AmiTCP keeps a screen up, but it is running. If you click the
close button on the CLI that you ran STARTNET from it'll say 'Process ending'
but the window won't close unless you ran STOPNET first (or open another window
and run STARTNET).
If you run STATUS you'll see AmiTCP:bin/inetd is still running. Also I can't
run Autopilot after running STARTNET, so I know something has got a hold on the
serial.device. :^)

This is the mail I sent to the editors of AmiTCP and PPP.
I am working with AutoPilot on Compuserve. Since Compuserve offers a full
Internet access I tried to find special Amiga programms to access Internet via
Compuserve PPP. At last I found the programms AmiTCP 4.0 (Demo) and PPP 1.3
which I have downloaded and installed. However I must learn, the the
discriptions for installation are very complicated, so that i got the opinio,
that bot programms must be from engineers for engineers. I am sorry but this is
my impression. I installed AmiTCP with the installer. If I run AmiTCP I find a
screen, which I confirm with o.k. Than nothing else is happend. If I run PPP by
execute "Startnet". Startnet is executing and nothing is happend. I took Snoop
DOS and XOPA to find out what the unit is doing. I found anything works fine.
AmiTCP and Netrace is waiting. Also Snoop DOS does not indicate any error while
executing.
So I am very confused about how to run the programm. Jochen Antsberger wrote to
access via a terminal programm and if the message comes "You have left basic
services…." than quit the terminal. This is not possible, because the modem
hangs up. So how to start AmiTCP and PPP?

If you are using a terminal program to hook up to CIS, issue a &D0 so that the
carrier is not dropped.

That last problem is simple – before you dial out with your modem, give it
the command AT&D0. This tells the modem to keep the connection when the
terminal program exits. Simple huh?
Really, you cannot expect to make internet software work easily – it's
just not as simple as using CIS. Have some respect for networks that have
been in operation since the sixties. Buy a book (I recommend Dale's –
shameless plug) about the subject, it'll all become clear to you.
Personally, I work at a helpdesk for PC's at a university. When I came to
work there, I knew about PC's and Amigas but I didn't know the first thing
about networks. We use a WAN with Novell's IPX and TCP/IP. Just by trying
and reading books I learned a lot. When I went home one day with a disk
containing AmiTCP, I expected a lot of hassle. But no! Installation was a
breeze – because I knew what the jargon meant. The installation is
enormously flexible and can do very much very fast. Ever tried setting up
a TCP/IP link on a PC? Brrrr…

I think AmiTCP is more complicated than it really needs to be. About 2 months
ago I installed MacTCP and InterSlip on my Emplant. Although it wasn't exactly
"Plug'N Play", it was about 20 times easier to install than AmiTCP and the SLIP
software for the Amiga.
Seems like AmiTCP was created by the net mindset that if you didn't know the
meanings of the words "Domain server, IP address, Finger, Spam, etc.", then you
didn't belong. Not for the AOL, CompuServe, and Portal netters like us <g>.
And no, "Finger" is not what you show to your monitor when you can't get AmiTCP
to work, and "SPAM" is not a processed meat that everyone hates <g>.
