Those new Iomega ZIP drives look interesting for backups and would be less of a
headache than tapes, you could probably find a file lots faster. They're
advertised as 100MB 3.5" disk drive, available in SCSI or parallel port
flavours. Price $199.99 Extra disks aren't very much either, around $19.95
1-4pcs., buy 10 and price drops to $14.95.
It be nice if there was a SCSI/Parallel port model.

Don't see why not, they are SCSI.
I'm considering making a purchase of one, but not just yet.
I do have to get the parallel port model for a peecee office. <sigh>

Chris, A friend of mine bought a ZIP drive. He bought the drive, which comes
wih 1 100Mb disk, and a 100Mb 5Pack for a total of 300 bucks!! Thats .6
Gig…not bad. It was like plug and play on his Amiga (But needed a seperate
cable for his 486 😉 )

We have two Zip drives and both are really nice. One is connected to an A3000
via SCSI, and the other to an A4000 via an Emplant SCSI. We call it our "high
tech sneakernet" <g> Only one minor complaint: their is no on/off power
switch. Otherwise, it is a very cost effective storage device.

I've just started reading about them.
They do sound interesting, though the throughput is something like
1MB/sec? I also don't know what the access speed is like.
(The media is still about 20 times more expensive than DAT tape….)
BTW, Trantor makes a SCSI->parallel port adaptor. You could get that and
the SCSI version of the ZIP drive for maximum trasnsportability.

Gee, the SCSI-parallel adaptors have been out for years. I haven't used
one for over 3 years, but I know they exist, and seemed to work back then.
Cost is around $150, I think.
Don't know anything about the ZIP drives, though, from what I hear, they
have a certain appeal.

Well, heck, if a SCSI/Parallel adaptor is $150, might as well just spend $199
on a parallel Zip drive and avoid all the swapping. 🙂
