#searching good earthmap

Hi to all!
I'm looking for a very realistic earth mapping. I have the earthmap from
Acuris but it doesn`t look like a real world as seen from space. I looked for a
photo to scan it but I didn`t found one that works. I`m flying around the world
so I have to map it perfect…
Anyone out there who has one for me?

Did you look at the BIGWLD.GIF in lib8 of GO GRAPHDEV? Do so. Combined with
the EARTHC.??? from this forum you can have a very usable globe with cool
clouds by mapping onto spheres. If for some reason you really want an earth
_mesh_, you could make your own by starting with the BIGWLD and painting a
displacement map with any paint program, then use the Yost Displace.

thank you for the tip. It`s the cheapest way and I`ll try it before I`ll
contact Viepoint or get the other CD.

By far, the most realistic earth map I've ever seen is sold by Viewpoint.
You'll end up paying a lot for it. But you can get it with or without the
ocean floor, a seperate cloud map, a grayscale mountain elevation map
<displacement map> – all at HUGE resolutions. It's pretty phenominal.
I believe it's the same one that a guy made a while back by pooling together
all the photos of the Earth he could get his hands on – then he cut and pasted
a 'cloudless earth' together.
If your $budget$ permits it, I'd suggest picking it up.

Earth map and did they say how much they want for the high resolution 8kx4k
version of that image?

I didn`t call them until now but the price of the low res map (2160 x 1080)
with Ocean Floor is 875 british pounds…
I`m afraid to know what the price of the high res (8720*4320) version is…

Michael: Thank you for your response. It turns out that Viewpoint does not have
the legal right to offer the hi-res Earth image since the author has signed an
exclusive agreement with a US company to produce some kind of CD-ROM. There is
Canadian company called Worlsat which has a similar image although I've seen a
cutout of the 8kx4k of Europe and the colors look a bit off, they want to see
tens of thousands of dollars to release the image. There is also one other guy
here in LA that has another image called GeoSphere and he is so protective of
the image like its national security. In any case, if you find something please
let me know. I'm trying to animate a zoom from orbit down to the Pyramids with
3D studio. Sincerely,

I have a workaround for my current job (fly very fast and have a lot of clouds
<g>). But I`ll buy a CD with great texture maps in the next weeks…
I`ll tell you when I have seen the mappings…

There's also a CD by Mountain High Maps, with 74 Ultra Hi-Res maps that took
twenty years to develop. They really are extrodinary, and a whole variety of
"world" maps as well as national/regional maps, with bumps etc. They were
digitized from sculpted models of high detail. They also include a mask with
ocean cartography. A little pricey for some but less than you'd typically
expect to pay for this level of detail. If you're interested I'll post you an
address.

There are some pretty good Earth maps on the Rendering Plant BBS. I don't have
the number handy, but someone here should chime in with it.

Thank you for the hint but I think a Viewpoint Map could be cheaper than
downloading to Germany from a USA mail box… <g>
