My A2000 is crashing in a random manner and has given various error codes. Upon reboot, it almost always gives the same code — 8000 0003 0020A712. Does anyone know what this means? I think it is heat related because it does not do this until its been on for awhile. If I cannot resolve this, my 2000 will become a boat anchor, or perhaps an artificial reef. Maybe I'll build a Stonehenge-like monument made up of dead computers I, and some friends own (a few 2000's, a 64, IBM 55sx, Mac IIcx, Apple Lisa, and a very old Silicon Graphics machine that we currently use a room heater). Seriously… any help would be very much appreciated. -Steve

It's quite a common problem you have. Basically the crash code 8000 0003 normally represents corrupt memory lists, which are normally a result of an inadequate power supply. I know, it happened to me! The only thing I can suggest is to seriously look at where your power is going and make sure you are using a power supply suitable for the machine. If all else fails go for an industry standard power supply. Most stores should be able to help.

Wow, thanks… I do have a lot of stuff crammed inside, but, I knew I would be doing that and installed Micro R&D 300 watt supply. I'll check voltages and pull my AMaxII board out since I'm not using it. Its funny, all those slots and not enough juice for 'em. Reminds me of our PCs here– a lot of slots but you could never fill them because there aren't enough IRQs or addresses. -Steve

Glad I could help. Just a thought: I am currently having probs with my machine. I get Illegal CPU instructions and corrupt memory lists yet I have replaced every last component of my machine from Motherboard to powerpack and still it occurs. Software has been ruled out as it has been tested on other machines as well as my HD and RAM board. At the moment I am open to any suggestions? Mike

It's the ether… or maybe sunspots, or perhaps the natural hum of the earth that some people claim to hear, maybe your computer hears it, too. -Steve

Thanks for that spiritual enlightenment! Mike

Steve; Your message is not real helpful however… 1) Do you have an accellerator in the machine? 2) Do you have a card mounted HD in the machine? For an immediate and general suggestion, the power supply and motherboard power connection was frequently troublesome on A2000s. I would suggest that you look for signs of over heating in the connector shell (darking of the white plastic). If you see something like this then the connector pins on the MB may need to be resoldered. In some cases just sliding the connector up and down on the pins will clear up PS problems. As the machine is a bit old now, it is pretty well possible for any connector to become intermittent (including socketed chips). All of the socketed chips could be moved up and down in their sockets just a little to remove any oxide that might have formed. Board card edge connectors can also become intermittent. All of this 'cleaning' and exercising should be done only by someone that understands and respects the potential for causing damage. In particular the "square" sockets are especially fragile. Indeed, a crack in one of these types of sockets has been the source of intermittent crashing problems for more than just a few machines. -bill

Thanks for the info, Bill. The important thing for me is two responses agree that it is power supply related, be it the supply itself or resistance in the power's path to components. I'll jiggle components and stuff to see if it'll help. -Steve

Steve, You didn't be any chance just move up to 2.x on an unaccellerated 2000? It had a lot of wierd 0000003 gurus when I first did moved to 2.0 on my 1000. Getting the latest SETPATCH helped, but didn't fix them all. I'm now on a '030 2000, and it's smooth sailing. -Jim

No, I've been running 2.1 since it came out. I have a Zeus 040 board with 16 Mb ram. I believe that it is the power problem… check out my 2000, its loaded to the gills: Zeus 040 w/16mb, Quantum 210 HD, Micropolis 2210 SCSI, PAR board w/Micropolis 2210 IDE drive, Firecracker24 display board, AMaxII+ board, extra fan to cool PAR board & drive, & the Amiga Display enhancer (De-interlacer). That's probably enough to stress my 300 watt supply. I'm going to remove the AMax board, it doesn't work with the Zeus SCSI controller, and I don't really need it anymore (got a Mac and it reads/writes dos disks). -Steve

Yikes, that is a loaded system. I thought mine was bad with a Toaster, GVP '030, 2091 & drive, and 2 4 meg zorro II memory cards. I moved my farm of piddly small HD's into an external PC minitower. -Jim
