Thanks for your interest in the problem of rendering an opacity map against a background…I changed the "black" part of the opacity map to RGB 001 and tried it again…still no luck! I think my best bet is to get version 1.1 (I have version 1.0)…but just in case you have any other suggestions, I'd be most receptive! T. Grossman 73417,2322

I can't really tell you what's happening with your map unless I see your file, and I don't have the time right now to look at it. Sorry. However, I'm SURE that if you have an opacity map with non 0,0,0 colors in it, it'll show the background through. There must be something else going on with your file. – G

My suggestion for trees uses a slightly different approach. Create a 2d shape roughly corresponding to the outline geometry of the tree. Assign it and bring it into the 3d-editor. Do planar surface mapping onto this object, straight on. Now prepare your material with the texture map of the tree at say 80%, a white opacity map of the tree on a black 0,0,1 background at 100%. Use two-sided, decal, and phong. Put this material into your materials library. Go to the 3d-editor and choose that material, assign it to the object. Now do a local-axis rotate on the object and hold the SHIFT down to clone it. You now should have a reasonable 3d-tree. The geometry should look like a "+" from above. Let me know if it works out.
