I've just started using the PAR for architectural animations. I have lot's of experience with frame rendering but new to fields. My question is perhaps elementary to those of you with field rendering experience so bear with me. When panning through interiors I'm getting major shaking throughout the image field, even with very closly spaced frames. I was working under the assumption that this is precisely when one should use field rendering, yet frames looked better. Am I missing something here? Any suggestions? Thanks. Michael Woodcox

I have seen this a few times in my three years of experience with 3ds and I have always remedied the problem by doubling the amount of frames. Brad Cooke

Michael, I've noticed this same thing while doing field rendering on the PAR. I've done field rendering directly to tape (using a Targa+) and did not have this problem. I'm wondering if it has something to do the D1 resolution (720×480) . With the Targa, I used 512×486. Anyone have an answer? George

I would venture to bet that your field order is reversed. Don't double the # of frames. In 3ds.set your field order should be 1. In the Par.exe preferences your field order should be 2. It seems that even if you've got it set up correctly the PAR will somehow save frames with reversed field order. This can be remedied by doing a power cycle and then either re-rendering or re-copying your images to the PAR. This should work for you. Good luck. DM

Sounds like this might be the answer since on some similar panning sequences I did not get the same jittering effect. Thanks for the suggestion, but tell me, what is a power cycle? MW

Michael: I'm not sure, but it sounds something like the field order is backwards. It is normal for the stills to be jumpy because the fields are rendered 1/60 sec. apart – the second field is a view of the model at 1/60 sec later than the first frame (assuming standard video 30 at frames/sec.) If you get the order backwards for whatever reason the geometry jumps back and forth from field to field instead of giving you smooth motion. I've seen it when I imported a string of .TGA files into my PAR, (but not when I've rendered directly to the PAR) and I assume that I got the field order screwed up when I imported the frames. Thanks.<<< Your field order may be backwards. If you rendered targas to your hard drive then copied to the PAR all you have to do change the field order in the PAR settings and copy the files over again. If the field order is backwards you will see the shake. The confusion comes from how 3DS and PAR determine field order. In 3DS it is 0 or 1, in the PAR it is 1 or 2. So 0 in 3DS is 1 in PAR, and 1 in 3DS is 2 in PAR. See where it can be confusing. When you render straight to the PAR you don't have the option of changing the order if you mess up. I would recommend saving you targas to your hard drive and saving them, there are plenty of times this has come in handy for me.
