Is there a way to find out from ARP who 'broke the rules?' When running
PageStream yesterday and using the graphics/clip-art features, APR gave me a
bit of 'heart failure' by giving me a red bordered message to the effect that
somebody had failed to release resources…… heart started pumping again
after I read the messages and confirmed that it was indeed of the 'recoverable'
alert variety.

I've seen that same red bordered message a lot lately (well, about three or
four times so far) and was wondering the same thing. I suspect PageStream, but
I haven't been able to duplicate it yet.

I have not been playing with PgS for the last few days but intend to keep an
eye on it to see if there is anything that is consistant.

Does PageStream use arp.library? There's no way to get any more info with the
Alert at this point … sure wish I could put up something besides a flashing
red box. If PageStream doesn't use arplib, what is probably happening is that
PageStream causes a memory panic (low memory), which would call arplib so it
can free resources. Thus if you had recently run a program which didn't free
resources, at that point you'd get the ALERT. Another possibility is that
something's corrupted memory, which is also getting flushed out during memory
flush.

Yesterday, the requester showed up when 'scanning' through a bunch of
directories with WP…. again a real heart stopper! Really had me wondering
since that is about the only way now that I see WP guru is when I am going into
a dozen or more directories and doing a lot of looking. Don't see any reason
though why the ARP message would come up then since no body is asking for any
memory (at least not even close to the kind of request that would approach even
an appreciable fraction of the free pool). Since the machine had recently been
rebooted there should not have been any fragmentation problem.

That's the only thing I can think of, that you've got some program which either
doesn't free resources or which consistently corrupts memory somehow, and this
gets flushed out when the memory routines call the library expunge code. It's
not necessarily fragmentation, just running low on memory (perhaps just chip
mem). Are you running anything else which is using arp.library besides the ARP
commands, TxEd, and BlitzDisk?

M2Sprint can cause this akert box to appear, as I've mentioned to you on BIX
Charlie. It's not due to a bug, but an implementation problem. It will occur if
the profiler is used to debug a program which opens the ARP library, or if the
debugger is used to dbug a program which opens ARP lib.
Yes, but that's a completely different problem which is controllable by the
program using arplib. In that case the library's doing what it was asked to do
by design. It's something you have to work around in atypical cases such as
the debugger. The random appearance of the alert for unknown reasons is still
a mystery though, which I'd like to track down.
I know it's a different matter, just wanted to point it out in case that may
have had something to do with it in a strange way (who knows, he may have been
doing a program profile while looking at file lists in WP 🙂 Anyway…

I am not running anything that uses the ARP library that I know of…. WShell
does not care and I have not even used TxEd since about a week after installing
the new ARP library. I'll keep an eye open for it, but other than the fact
that I have never before seen that requester and have never seen it unless PgS
either was running or at least had been running, I still can't help but suspect
something wrong there. I have not run out of chip memory in quite awhile since
I am pretty careful about that. Usually when I do, it is in WP and I can
recover by shrinking a CLI and then cleaning up a bit.
Don't know if I mentioned this one, but I did get that message just before a
crash with WP a couple of days ago……. I was searching around for a WP file
that was created about a year ago on one of the 30 Meg partitions and received
the requester when changing directories. Have not talked with Lynn about this
one yet, but I think that WP is doing something wrong in handling directories
since it seems that if you keep changing directories long enough in WP that you
will always guru eventually….. might take an HOUR or so but it will happen.

Funny, I got a similar result in a game, Fire Brigade, as you got with WP;
changing directories frequently without accessing any resulted in a GURU (not
running ARP on this disk). The game uses the "Inovatronics File Requester," if
that rings any bells (?). sw

I am pretty sure that PgS does not use the ARP files…. hell instead of
'pretty sure,' I looked… if they do then they have figured out how to do it
without the library <grin>.

I've been running the 1.3 ARP for some time and haven't seen that alert
while running Pagestream. Perhaps you can remember exactly what it was you were
doing when it showed up?

The exact thing that I was doing was asking for status from PgS, the thing that
had preceded that operation was the 'dumping' of a graphics image.
