Thanks… It's nice to know that I didn't spend over 400.00 on something
that would soon be useless! Right now I'm running with a full overscan WB
(704×470) and displaying it on a Tatung monitor that I think is multisync,
but possibly just VGA compatible. The problem I'm having is that there are
2 black strips on either side of the monitor, and the FF manual says that's
a fault of the monitor, not the FF. It also says that that is with VGA
monitors, and so does that mean that this monitor isn't multisync, but just
VGA? Do you have any recomendations on a good fairly inexpensive multisync
monitor? Is the NEC truly the best one? Thanks..

Mike, I dunno about the NEC, so much, but my Utra 14" (by Princeton
Graphics) is doing quite well by me! I believe that it is a couple of
hundred less than the comparable NEC, too. Have you looked into the
Mitsubishi Diamond Scan? That's the only multi-sync I know of that has a
composit *in* (like the regular Amiga monitors).

Mike, the only monitors which are designed to completely fill the screen
are those that are based on television technology like IBM CGA or the
normal Amiga display. Higher scan rate monitor standards have a black
border around the active display region. Both VGA and multiscan type
monitors behave this way. My four year old NEC Multisync has about 5/8
inch of border on either side which is typical.
The Taxan 770 Plus and the new Commodore A1950 have a wider range of
horizontal size adjustment than most and can be set up for very narrow
borders. The NEC 3D is a bit more expensive than most, but NEC has a very
good reputation for reliability. Many people like the Mitsubishi AUM-1381A
which is the only multiscan I know of with a composite input. The
Mitsubishi usually is available at a good price, but has a relatively wide
border at high scan rates.
You might want to look at a file named FFINFO.ARC which lists a number of
compatible monitors. It is in the hardware library of AmigaTech. I
recently uploaded another file, FFQA.LZH which has answers to some commonly
asked questions about fF and the ECS.
Peter.
Your knowledge of multiscan monitors positively amazes me, every time you
write messages like this… Have you ever considered writing a definitive
article on monitors and flicker-fixing? The Amiga mags would certainly take
it, and without the Amiga stuff, even a PC magazine would like it. Tell
you what, you put down some notes, and I'll ghost/edit it, and pitch it to
AmigaWorld… 1/2 🙂
Mike:
I have an NEC 3D and it works great. It should work with ECS and the 3000
OK (that's why I bought it). I don't have a Flicker Fixer so I don't know
if it has the black bar problem.
