Life's a beach John. That's how life was back then. and the damsels being rescued were _ladies_, not peasants, therefore they were put on a pedestal. Amounting to anything didn't even enter it. There are many, many, many, many ridiculous things about our modern 'egalitarian ' society… but that's _our_ society. If it works, no member of another society should sneer at it. Wife beating in this country is considered a crime… I once read of a tribe of 'primitives' (Yanomamo?) who think that if you don't beat your wife, it means you don't love her. 'Take over peoples' land. D*mn straight. That's how life worked. The Saxons wanted the same land that the Normans wanted. Would we handle it any differently today?? If so, howso? Defender of the Crown may not be the ultimate in games, but it's a large advance over Space Invaders. –Eet–

I'm waiting for King Arthur and the Holy Grail ala Monty Python "And with this God gave unto his flock the Holy Hand Grenade, with which they might smite their enemies to tiny bits . . ." John

And the number of the count shall be three. Not two, and not one, but three. :^) oh, and nor shall ye count to four, for the number of the counting is to be three. :^))) Ben Amateur Radio Callsign is A A 7 A S

ARTHUR: Have we got bows? KNIGHT: No. LAUNCELOT: We have the Holy Hand Grenade. ARTHUR: Yes, of course! The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch! 'Tis one of the sacred relics Brother Maynard carries with him! Brother Maynard! Bring up the Holy Hand Grenade! [angels singing] How does it, uh… how does it work? BEDIVERE: I know not, my liege. ARTHUR: Consult the Book of Armaments! MAYNARD: Armaments, Chapter Two, Verses Nine to Twenty-One. BROTHER: "And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, 'Oh, Lord, bless this thy hand grenade that with it thou mayest blow thy enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy.' And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large –" MAYNARD: Skip a bit, Brother. BROTHER: "And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thou foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.'" MAYNARD: Amen. ALL: Amen. ARTHUR: Right! One… two… five! LAUNCELOT: Three, sir! ARTHUR: Three! [boom] (Just one of the most useful files I've got sitting on my hard disk… 🙂

That 's all I've got, sorry. Someone on a local BBS violated copyright and typed it in… I've also got the "Brag of the SubGenius" on disk, if you know what that is. It's got a few four-letter words in it, so it should go e-mail instead. I'll send you both, because I (purposely) destroyed the formatting on the Grenade script for posting…

I'm not denying history, of course, I'm talking about what I want to teach people is a good way to play, or a good way to treat other people. And I disagree, I feel perfectly justified in sneering – and more – at societies who think violence is a way of life. And you're right, Defender of the Crown is just as bad as Space Invaders. When was the last time that unprovoked violence advanced *your* position in society? Did you steal toys as a kid, too?
#33114From: JAMES D. WILLIAMSMay 7, 1990 9:49 PM
Since when is theft equivalent to violence? are pickpockets and burglars violent? Not necessarily. Violence has always been, and always shall be part of the existance of sentient life. The last time I recall it specifically advancing my position was about 4 years ago. The details are NOYDB :). Nontheless, my original point concedes that _this_ society presumes to discourage violence, while others presume to, if not promote, then at least accept violence. –Eet–

Sounds like you've got a bad case of "relativitis". As long as you can find some other society that permits some behavior, you're content to say it must be OK, or worse still, that you refrain from judging the situation, using your powers of logic.
#33160From: JAMES D. WILLIAMSMay 9, 1990 12:16 AM
Nope. _In _context_ (ie, in _that_ society) it is 'OK'… but not necessarily in mine or in my view. You bet I'll refrain from judging the situation… _out_of_context_. Evolution doesn't judge the 'rightness' or 'wrongness' of behaviour beyond whether it is pro survival or anti-survival. We don't know the mechanisms of evolution well enough to judge behaviour outside of our own soceity. (Which _doesn't_ mean that you can't make judgements within your _own_ society, since here it funtions as part of the evolutionary process). Maybe one day we will know the mechanisms well enough, but this pathetic know-it-all soceiety doesn't. I don't like the idea of 11 chimpanzees mounting 1 female, and none claiming her nor the child she bears… but time will tell whether this is 'right' or 'wrong'… (that image is one that's stuck with me since an intro anthro class years ago) –Eet–
