KS 1.3 in ROM

Greg, I just read the article in the May Amazing/Amiga about putting KS 1.3
into ROM on an A1000. This sounds like a nice (and cheap :^) temporary
solution to the disk KickStart until your board AND the 2.0 ROM's are
available. I need to know, tho, if the mod's involved in the article would
mess up your installation needs? i.e. do you need all the gold posts
supporting the daughter board? Because they all come out for this mod.

If you read the article in AC about adding a CBM ROM to your A1000, do
yourself a favor and BURN the magazine!!!! That has got to be one of the
worst hacks I've ever seen in an article. We manufacture and sell the
KwikStart board for the A1000 that effectively does the same thing, EXCEPT
it only requires you to remove one 20 pin chip. (unsoldering) I estimate
approximatly 5% of the people trying this mess it up. That article has you
unsoldering 120+ pins, and then replacing virtually all of them with chips.
I would guess that 50% or more of the machines modified by this upgrade are
going to be scrap before its complete.
I AM NOT an uninterested bystander. I do sell a competing product that
retails for more money than what the articles mod would cost. I do believe,
however, that the KwikStart upgrade will cost you less in the long run.

PS. Gregs board does require the gold posts, since that is where the
Rejunivator mounts.
Thanx, Dean for the quick reply!! I won't do this mod if the Rejuvenator
needs the posts, because I plan to purchase this board. I am not afraid to
do any hacking sinc I have been HardWare and SoftWare hacking since the
early 70's when I learned all about the BASIC language and computers at
Dartmouth College, and I have hacked quite a few machines and programs for
my own custom use. I do see your point hwever and agree that there probably
will be a lot of destruction because of this article. BTW, if you are stoll
selling the KwickStart, can you EMail me pricing and ordering info. Will it
support the new 512K ROM's?

The current SRP for the KwikStart is $119.99 without the ROMs. It
currently works with 1.3 version kickstart, and _should_ work with the 2.0
version with a PAL change. I can't say for sure without having a ROM to
try, and none exist at this point.

David, it looks to me like it should be possible to do the AC mod WITHOUT
desoldering all those posts. Inside you can solder 2 sockets together, back
to back (solder their pins together so there is a socket facing each way).
The two sockets can then be placed on the gold pins and the chips placed in
the other socket. so you would have the pins from the motherboard, an
upside down socket connected to the pins, a right side up socket soldered
to the upside down socket, and then the chip inserted in the right side up
socket. Use headers to plug the new PCB into the two ROM sockets. This
method will require no desoldering and should be removable (aside from the
trace cuts and jumpers required for the motherboard). I should get my parts
this week, and I'll post the results here. This should be an easier to
reverse (though less solidly attached) version of the project. The soldered
together sockets aren't hard to make.

planning on getting a 3000 around Christmas, but I would like to keep my
1000 as up to date as possible. Thanx God for people like Greg Tibbs and
their ideas!!

If you remove the gold posts then you cannot add the Rejuvenator unless you
put them back; a process that has a low probability of success without
damaging traces on the motherboard.
