#Dead Mouse Port! Help!!!

Here I am needing help again! Last night the mouse port on my NEW (less
than 2 months old) 2000 decided to give up on me! I was playing
Clown-OMania and when I rebooted to get out of the game the mouse was gone.
Well most of it anyway.
The buttons on the mouse still funtion but the X/Y rollers have no effect
now. I've been improvising using the keyboard equivalents but it's a pain.
Does anyone out there have an idea as to what might have died? I'd guess a
chip somewhere went away but all other functions on the machine are fine.
What chip could get stomped and leave all else running? The other 9 pin
port is just fine, I tried out a joystick in it and it works great! I've
found on the schematics a chip (74LS157) which most of the mouse signals go
through. There are of course other signals but they go to things like
Denise or Paula and I thought the machine had diagnostics to tell us if one
of the custom chips died!
Anyway, any and all help would be greatly appreciated. My dealer tries
very hard but he has a heck of a time dealing with Commodore! I used to
know one tech in town who was very good with Amigas. He of course left!

P.S. This things a real pain to use the keyboard equivalents to move the
mouse pointer, I don't recommend it!

If you have a bridgeboard, you can use the Amouse program to assign the
mouse to the other (joystick) port by typing L-amiga P. I had to do this
untill I had the motherboard on my machine swapped out. As fate would have
it, the one that was swapped out also has a problem, and I'm waiting for
the dealer to get in more motherboards so we can try again! (fixed the
mouse problem, but now external disk drives don't work!)

Many thanks for your help. I do indeed have a BBoard installed, heck with
my luck it fried the mouse port! 🙂 I didn't think to use the mouse swap
function, I'll give it a try. I know the second port is fine as I tried a
game with it working properly. I've already been told by the dealer this
may need a motherboard swap and I've had the machine a whole 2 months now!
At least they loaned me their 2000 just in case I got stuck. I've got a
due date on some stuff I'm working on over on the AT BBoard! Again thanks!

I forgot to tell you what happened to my system. On day, the left mouse
button just went away, I could hit the LMB all day long and no response.
Well, my first thought was that it MUST be a bad mouse, so I pulled out the
CBM mouse and hooked it up to the 2000, and it's LMB didn't work either!
About a week later I got the machine to the local dealer, and we swapped
the motherboard with a new one, LMB worked fine, so off I went to play with
my now healthy (so I thought) machine. When I got home, I plugged in all my
accessories, and fired up the machine, only to find that the external drive
didn't work! If I had an external drive hooked up, the internal drive
wouldn't work, and if I put a disk in the external one, I'd get icons on
the screen saying DF1:bad DF2:bad DF3:bad all this with only 1 drive hooked
up! Well I had to wait for the dealer to get more motherboards in, and just
tonight I got a new one in, and now the system is back up to snuff. While
there, the dealer upgraded the ROM in the XTBB to version 3.6.1 from 3.5
and also upgraded the ROMs on my 2620 card (he was actually suprised that
the system was working with the old ROMs on the 2620 at all.

That's pretty interesting to hear. I've been trying to get the new ROMs
for both my 2620 and my 2091 for a couple of weeks now. Commodore has not
been so cooperative with my dealer here. Dave Minnich is trying to get
things moving for me. I have the current level ROMs on the AT BB as I made
sure of that when I got it. They had just started shipping.
I have a loaner now for the duration of the repair but when I was swapping
all my cards over I did find I had a bad cable on the AT BB. In fact it
initially wouldn't let the machine boot at all! When I replaced the cable
the machine came up fine. I also ran into those weird things like the
drives not working, my hard drive wouldn't even boot it just started to
read and then pooped out. The new cable took care of all of the problems
so I have a system for now. I'd tried your idea of using the Amouse but it
didn't buy me a thing. The ports would apparently swap because the PC menu
bar read correctly but the mouse wouldn't work on the right port either!
Did you HAVE to have amouse running on the PC side for this to work? I
couldn't and never have gotten the amouse routine to run on the BBoard with
the 2620 and with no mouse their is no way to disable it!
Anyway I'll be checking the old machine with no cards in it before I
declare it officially dead. It probably is but I'll make sure it wasn't
the cable. Thanks for relaying the story.

Don't even bother trying to fix it…simply take the unit back to
your dealer's. You've got a full years warranty. Let them figure out
what's wrong and fix it. More than likely…you've blown one of the chips.

I already talked to the dealer and they are talking to Commodore right now
figuring out what to do. Will probably swap the motherboard from what I
hear. Can't imagine zapping a chip, never had a port problem on any
computer I've owned. Oh well…

The mouse and serial ports are quite static sensitive on the Amiga,
so blowing chips is actualy an easy matter if you are careless.

I had heard that, especially the mouse port so I'm always super careful.
The joystick port is the one that is supposedly buffered and therefore a
bit more resistant to damage. I found a bad cable on my AT BBoard and I
wouldn't rule out that I found the problem right there. The machine never
did seem quite right and it may have been the cable. At any rate I have
one on loan for the duration and a message to Dave Haynie so he can help
the dealer figure it out!
