I'm looking for the latest/greatest Mandelbrot program for the Amiga, speed
is the greatest consideration. I'm running an 030/882, and would like to
show it off. Which PD program should I hunt for?
Although it is not PD, FractalPro3.0 is the fastest Mandelbrot program I
have used with my 3001. It has the added advantage of using HAM mode for
display, which results in really pretty pictures. I think the cost was
about $40…
I have a theory that the spot on Gorby's head is a Mandlebrot that amounts
to the number 666.Yuk-Yuk.

I'm using MandelVroom v2.0 on my GVP3001. It has a couple of gotchas:
a. The menus show an '020/'881 mode — but it won't go into that
mode on my '030/'882. The best (in terms of resolution, accuracy) is IEEE
mode, which the docs claim will go to the hardware if it exists. This is
the SLOWest mode, however, especially on full screens. I've fidgeted and
fidgeted, but can't get it to take the '020 mode.
b. This is the BIGGIE: when you save an ILBM file, it crashes when
it tries to write the icon for the file (screen explodes!). This results
in an #?.info file of 0 length, and a looong re-validation of my harddisk.
After the validation, there doesn't seem to be any residual flakiness, and
the ILBM file proper is O.K. HOWEVER, there is no way to disable the icon
write, and I don't like fire-bombing my HD like that repeatedly. SO…
I don't seem to be using the program as much as I'd like to. It has
some excellant feature: mucho configurability, lots of switches, a Gorgeous
Intuiion interface (Kind of an WB 2.0 3D look), but that BOMB, and it don't
find my 68882 (of the '030).
So close…and yet so far! 8-).

MandleVroom 2.0 using the integer math mode seems to be fastest on my 25Mhz
GVP setup. Unfortunately it uses a very simple pixel-by-pixel scanning
algorithm. There are much faster ways to do it. Otherwise, as you've
heard, it is the gosh-dang purtyest Amiga program you've ever seen.
Look around here for a prog. named something like "fastmand." It uses a
very efficient algorithm but uses the FFP reals.
Let's see what I can dig up. I've got a toolshed loaded with half finished
fractal generators. Mainly I write tricky code then am too lazy to slap a
user interface on it. — Art
