Pete, you're absolutely right about the jerkiness with large objects. It's
just one of those limitations I've spent the last few years learning to
work around. PVPost now makes that unnecessary. Hallelujah! –Rick

I haven't seen PVP in action, but it sure sounds nifty. I would guess that
PVP's speed and smoothness are a result of the effects being "canned." By
that I mean, you have little or no control over them. This permits the
program to optimize these moves for speed. For example, flips and tumbles
around a single axis are very easily optimized. The fact that PVP expects a
screen of certain dimensions and depth, also makes it easier to optimize
the effects. DPAINT, AnimMagic and others permit greater flexibility so
cannot benefit from some of these tricks. Just illustrates the benefits of
specialization.
You said the playback of the animation was quick. How many different frames
are generated for a given effect?
The choices are, again, "canned," to use your term.
As I recall, without going to the documentation, there are four choices,
ranging from 8 frames to somewhat over a second. The faster speeds are the
best; since the entire effect is stored in chip ram, the slower speeds seem
to be accomplished by redisplaying each frame more than once, yielding a
choppy-looking result. But since my own needs had to do with quick flips
and tumbles on- and off-screen, the faster speeds are fine and slower
speeds or more complex effects send me to VE3D or AniMagic.

Aha. So what you're saying is that the animation consists of only eight
frames. If this is the case, then all the frames can be fully rendered and
in chip memory (just barely) when the effect is run. Since switching
between screens in chip can be done at 60fps, this would account for the
smoothness. Neat!
John, PVPost actually allows you to rotate around more than one axis at a
time, but you're right about the effects being canned. Also, this version
accepts three different resolutions of HIRES overscan. There are only four
speed settings, ranging from 8 to 64 fields. –Rick Rodriguez
What are the screen sizes, Rick?
720×480, 704×480, 672×444. Other sizes are imported and then cropped or
centered to fit your selected resolution. –Rick
