Commodore stock closed today at 8 1/8. That represents a one-day gain of over 10%. Does anybody have any idea why? Should I sell the house, car kids and dog and get in while the gettin's good?

I think CBM's stock just went up with the market as a whole. Watching CBM's stock performance for years now, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone (well, I *do* have a few enemies…).

Uh, the market dropped 2 points today.

OK, so maybe the stock on occasion goes up all by its lonesome. But not often. I sold mine about 4 years ago, and lost about 30% of my investment (only a few hundred bucks). However, a friend of mine bought back in CBM's heyday at $35 per share. He's been holding ever since in the deparate hope that the price will rise to the point where he can bail out without losing his pants along with his shirt. PS…I still invest in CBM products, though.

Yesterday it went up another 1/2 point.

Steve- Why's the stock going up? Is there going to be an into at the June CES involving that CD ROM – game machine thing? Tim

Yes there was an introduction, but I don't think that's the reason the stock is going up. CBU closed at 9 1/8 today. Pretty high volume too. Seems lots of people are curious about the stock price rise. I'll just say I think it's big times ahead, and leave it at that. 🙂 Steve

Steve- You optimistic analysis intrigues me…I've been thinking about the wisdom of buying a 3000 when available (I have two 2000s) because of CBMs relatively weak position in the computer market (compared to Apple and IBM, of course). I use the computers at work for business purposes as a write-off, but good business software is scarce on the Amiga platform. However, if the new products really take off, bringing in lots of development money, I'll take a kinder view of the situation. Tim

It dropped in what appears to be profit taking today to 8 3/8. In any event when I bought in at 7 3/8 I intended to be in for the long haul based on what I think is some aggressive hiring policies, Dos 2.0, the A3000, and some very interesting opportunities in Eastern Europe, which CBU is positioned quite nicely for. This is not a recommendation for others as CBU is a highly speculative issue.

Kevin: I decided today to place more trust in CBU than just buying their products, picked up 200 shares at 8.5 today. -Mike Schiller CIS: 76416,3065

I agree, you have to be in for the long haul. If you're just in for a quick buck, things are a lot more iffy. Steve

Long haul? Naw, go for the killing, but do it in options. Rob.

Well, "don't bet what you can't afford to lose." That being said I bought C= call options when the stock was at 7 1/2. I'm counting on 'em to pay for my A3000. — Art

No, too safe, all you can do is lose your own money! Buy options on margin using a second mortgage! John

Yeah, someone around here sank a *lot* of money in options expecting the price to be up last February, and probably lost it all. Options are too iffy for me. :*) Steve

It may well be that a few of those who have lost money on Apple, Adobe, IBM and other high tech stocks are moving their money to a new venue. The high techs have taken some big hits over the last two weeks, in the case of Adobe they lost more money per share in one day than a share of C= costs in total. So it may be that a few of those who've lost on the other computer stocks are looking for a less volatile issue. And with C='s low price by comparison, some of these folks may have decided to throw a few thousand that way just on the off chance that C= starts making some gains, while the others are trying to rebound from their losses. That combined with the recent articles on government sales could turn a few heads. I wouldn't sell anything to buy C= stock, but if I had some extra bucks stashed away, I'd take a few hundred shares.

I agree. CBM stock is not necessarilly a *bad* investment, if you, say, bought at $3-8 dollars per share, and have some *extra* cash lying around. My theory is that C= stock, if it ever does hit, is one issue that will require a lot of patience and "sitting on". sooner or later you will make money, should you decide to sell and take profits. The thing is that as a multinational company (and reasonably diversified), they may actually be a very good long term investment. To invest in them, these days, however, reqires believing in their Amiga line, and or any new technology they may develop along the way, as well as their management (The last item blows it for most :-)). Personally, I picked up a few hundred additional shares two months ago, simply because i have confidence in the "man-of-copper" and crew. Wall Street analysts even tend to agree with me. -Rick

Rick- Try mutual funds. Unless you like to live with High Risk rollercoaster rides. Other than some loyalty to CBM, I'd have to advise anyone I know against their stock at this time. Depends on what they got up their sleeve this summer. Tim
#107821From: Rick MoyerJun 6, 1990 2:36 AM
I'm not so sure, Tim. like I said, before, I used *used* extra cash… I'm not looking for a quick return. And I know there a lot worse investments one could make besides Commodore stock. What I said about the issue requiring patience does hold true… And of course, I don't know when it is *ever* considered 'advisable'. 🙂 I just feel that if there is a time to buy into the issue, now is the time to do it, that's all. But be prepared to sit and wait on it. Or in other words, don't expect to make a quick kill on it, that's all.
#107975From: Tim AveryJun 7, 1990 7:27 PM
Rick- The stock has inched down a little lately. You know, if Apple or Nintendo had shown the CD ROM thing at CES rather than Commodre, I bet the press would have gone wild with superlatives. As it was, it was just one of several products covered in the newspaper. Tim

I'm not thinking of Commodore's 'baby' as being the prime reason for purchasing their issue… 😉 -Rick

CBU hit 9.5 midday today, don't know how it's going to close, though! I wouldn't sell the house, but there's room to move if you have a couple bucks lying around (IMHO, of course!)
