We use dxb format to convert 3D drawings to 2D isometrics. The procedure is
described in several books including the ACAD manuals (I can't remember
where exactly). The output is fair. Small details are lost or
misinterpreted so there is a tradeoff. I have never used dxf binary, but
you have aroused my curiosity.
