Has anyone heard of EMPLANT. It's supposed to be a hardware/software
product from Utilities Unlimited. It's suppose to emulate the MAC IIx in
color! It also has two appletalk ports that can be used in both the MAC
and Amiga environment. Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that it
MULTITASKS!!! Run a color MAC silmultaneously with your Amiga S/W!!!! It
also has a SCSI option for those who do not have a SCSI controller. It
also will support third party video products like the DMI Resolver, DCTV,
HAM-E, Impact Vision Board, Lowell, and Rambrandt!!!!!
I have called Utilities Unlimited to confirm this and it is true! They
will also have 386 and 486 boards out soon. Oh yeah NUBUS adaptors is a
possibility in the future.
NOTE: This board uses the SIMM/ROM for the MAC II series computers which
is still available from Apple (approx. $90) It will emulate a Quadra with
the appropiate options!!!
Total cost is under $300 list for the full blown version with SCSI, etc…
and under $200 with the emulator by itself.. Full page adds to come
soon. Ships in July!

I wouldn't get too excited if I were you. Utilities Unlimited is a very
small company and most of the stuff they produce (Sybil, SuperAMI, etc) are
'hack'-type products. Jim Drew of UUO has been posting lengthy messages to
Usenet hyping Emplant as the ultimate emulator over the last few days now.
Several users on Usenet complain frequently about how UUO's products do not
work to their expectations.
I personally own a Sybil unit, and I agree with their experiences. The
software for Sybil is bug-ridden and easily crashes; it takes lots of
experimenting to get Sybil to work properly. Frankly, I think Mr. Drew
announced the Emplant emulator just to take some steam out of Readysoft's
A-MaxII+ emulator.

I second your critique of Utilities Unlimited. I got their disk copying
thing (had some old Hash disks that were keydisk protected…"yeah, sure,
it'll do the trick NO PROBLEM…") and it didn't do ANYTHING!! In fact, it
would not copy some disks that AmigaDOS did…I went through two of the
things, and gave up.

I heard about this a week or so ago, and have also requested more info. The
inestimable Amiga sages on the DEC network seem a tad skeptical concerning
the maker's software abilities, while still respecting his hardware
talents. (I hope they're wrong, personally!)
Time will tell, tho; it's certainly worth waiting 'til July before making
any rash purchases, such as any *other* '386 boards which might become
available…

Well, it is true that until it ships, it's vaporware, but I'm gonna hold
out and make sure… Sounds too good to be true? maybe, but so did the
toaster for the years we kept hearing about it…..

Yes, but the Toaster was created by NewTek, a company that had a proven
track record for producing quality Amiga hardware and software before the
Toaster was ever released. Utilities Unlimited has a poor track record
which is why people have serious doubts about the Emplant emulator.
Well, I hope that it's true, but I won't believe it until I see it. And in
the meantime, I've ordered AMAX II+, partly because ReadySoft has provided
the Amiga community with a quality product, and supported properly for many
years. I'm not going to let vaporware affect my decision to upgrade my
current AMAX II to the best that ReadySoft has to offer.
Now I understand what Ben Williams has against a company pre-anouncing
products before they exist (and if it ain't shipping, it doesn't exist!).
