#Help w/ARPs, XIcon?

I'm a relative newcomer to the Amiga series of computers, and am encountering some difficulties in a few files that are missing from downloads. First off, what is an ARP library, and why don' t the software packages I download include them, if they're essential to their proper operation? Secondly, what is an XIcon, and why isn't it covered in the AmigaDOS manual I recently purchased (the docs supplied with my 500 were worse than useless, and I consider an MS-DOS manual light reading)? Any answers to these questions, or directions to help files would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, peter

Peter, arp.library is a library of routines used by the 'Amiga Replacement Project' command set. They were a set of commands that executed faster, and were somewhat more versitile that the equivalent AmigaDOS commands. Just as an example, it contained among other things…a fairly robust file requester. Thus, because of the functionality of some of the things in the library (such as the file requester) and because arp.library was freely available other programmers used those routines…thus you need the library to run the programs. Normally, it's included in the archive. However, it's available as a download by itself in LIB 13 of the Amiga Tech forum as ARPLIB.ZOO. You'll need ZOO to extract the library itself. XIcon is a program that will execute a script file from an ICON. Don

<heavy sigh of relief> thank you for the info, I'll check it out immediately! Aside from that frustration, I've had loads of fun w/this machine (no other system lets you play SimCity while waiting for a particularly large download to finish), and can hardly wait to "convert" my father! Peter
